Workunits have very long processing time

Hi:

Are other volunteers encountering this issue? The laptop I am using is an Alienware 17" equipped with an Intel i7-3740QM processor rated at 270GHtz. On November 26, I downloaded 16 Zika WUs to be processed. These WUS had an estimated completion time of 25 hours. After 5 days and over 50 hours of CPU time, there is still another 15 hours to go before this batch of 8 Zika WUs are done. So how does a batch that was initially estimated to take 25 hours to complete end up taking 75 hours on an Intel i7 CPU?
Are other crunchers encountering this long run time issue? I have not altered any WCG settings.

Clive

Re: Workunits have very long processing time

What operating system are you using ?Also you must have an amazing machine rated at 270 ghz. Most are probably 2.7 ghz, so I think that is a typo. The first thought that comes to mind is your laptop is overheating and thus throttling itself. I can not imagine the Zika units taking that long. Check your temperatures.
Cheers

Re: Workunits have very long processing time

Yes, I'm having this issue as well. I've already aborted one WU after 50 hours. Right now I have one that has been running for over 30 hours, with an estimated time to completion of 4h 19m, yet it is showing as only 16.9% complete.

I'm running on a quad-core 3.1GHz desktop and 16GB of RAM under Windows7 64-bit. This is the only issue of this type I've seen in several years of running on this computer.

Re: Workunits have very long processing time

This seems like a bug specific to the Windows version.
I'm looking at 36 pages of valid results from a Linux machine (AMD 1950x), sorted by duration.

Longest is 1.54 hours, median is about an hour.

Just out of curiosity, you may want to post the batch number for each misbehaving work unit. Maybe the techs can spot a pattern.

Re: Workunits have very long processing time

Not sure which is the batch number - it's showing the application name as OpenZika 7.08. The WU name is ZIKA_000294139_x5gjb_ZIKV_NS3h_w_RNA_MDavg_1b_0184_0.

It has now run for a further 5 hours so the elapsed time is 35:18:27 as I write this; the remaining time is 04:58:20; and very interestingly, the progress is unchanged at 16.956%.

Re: Workunits have very long processing time

It appears the work unit is somehow stuck. I would reboot the machine and see if that allows the progress of the work unit to continue. Other wise, if a work unit runs twice as long as you think it should, I would just abort it and let another machine take a crack at it. If it is truly a bad unit, it will bomb for everyone and they will take it out of circulation after a predetermined number of tries.

OK,

I have some Windows updates pending since yesterday anyway so it's time to re-boot and it will perhaps kill two birds with one stone.

Re: Workunits have very long processing time

Just a quick update:

Re-booting the PC seems to have done the trick. the WU immediately started progressing beyond the 16.956% at which it was stuck, and successfully completed.

Re: Workunits have very long processing time

Hi:
Why is the processing time so much longer using the Windows OS vs Linux OS? One of the earlier respondents indicated that the average turn around time on his Linux machine is 1 hour. The Zika WUs that the i7-3740 CPU in my laptop working on right now have an estimated run time of 65 hours. I have the laptop sitting on a cooling pad equipped with three fans for heat control.
Linux seems to be a more efficient OS to install on a cruncher. Would others agree?

Re: Workunits have very long processing time

cehunt,

64-bit Linux is far better for the Vina Sciences (SCC, FAAH, ZIKA, OET)
50 % to 60% faster IIRC.
