Since today my machine also runs Linux from a USB stick (looks like a 15% increase in PPD with Linux).
----------------------------------------Also you can undervolt your CPU to save a lot of watts. Without touching anything I had about 90 watts, undervolted to 0.95v and 3.6 instead of 3.8 ghz I now have just 60 watts for the whole system. ![]() |

Well, did you also think about:
----------------------------------------- managing 5 boxes vs. managing only 1 box? - shear size of 5 boxes vs. only 1 box - electric bill is on Xeon side, that's been elaborated - price is the same, also elaborated - heat deployment, as 5 systems will get more heat into your place (wherever it is?) - badges collection will be (roughly) the same, as you'll have 40 threads, also elaborated - use of GPU crunching, as per 5 boxes you can deploy more power to GPUs (if you want to?) Also: - using USB3 for flash-drive OS is OK, but if it's a new system then you can't open it (unless warranty is not your concern) My vote would be P710, as I do work on them on my job & they are great. But also, 'cause I have 4 computers in my room & not much time to deal with all of them. ![]() |

Well, did you also think about: - managing 5 boxes vs. managing only 1 box? - shear size of 5 boxes vs. only 1 box - electric bill is on Xeon side, that's been elaborated - price is the same, also elaborated - heat deployment, as 5 systems will get more heat into your place (wherever it is?) - badges collection will be (roughly) the same, as you'll have 40 threads, also elaborated - use of GPU crunching, as per 5 boxes you can deploy more power to GPUs (if you want to?) Hi and yes, I thought of all those topics. In your order... 1)The boxes are Win10 and I literally set them up in under 10 mins. Like my dozens of other Windows boxes (and a few Macs), they just run forever. The only gotcha could be a power outage which I might have to go power them back on (some desktops power themselves up when plugged in...I'm not sure the exact condition but my 2010 Mac Mini does this and so do the SFF boxes. 2)These Lenovo m710 SFF boxes are quite small. I thought about getting the Tiny version but it's a bit more expensive and is the 7700T chip which I believe crunches about 20% fewer than the 7700 chip. So the Tiny is a nice space saver and watt saver, but I have plenty of room in my basement to store numerous pcs. 2 SFF boxes is about the same size as that 1 dual-Xeon workstation tower. 3)The SFF boxes really don't give off that much heat crunching 100%...I have 3 of them in my small 10x10 office and it's nothing uncomfortable. Besides, I don't mind the extra heat in the winter...in summer I can just plop them in the basement if it's too hot. 4)The Cancer projects on WCG don't use GPU. I can always add a GPU to the SFF boxes. I've been waiting for years to simply buy some nice $150 GPUs and stick them in my older towers, but alas, WCG doesn't utilize GPUs. What it really boils down to is that I can get 5 SFF systems for $1999 vs. a dual-Xeon single box for $2650 AND the Xeon box is slower is about 35% slower. I've been told in this thread that the Xeon box would be 3x faster than a single SFF...so that means 3 SFF= 1 dual-Xeon box. Given that the SFF boxes are $399 each, I'm really comparing $1200 worth of i7 chips to $2650 worth of Xeon chips. Huge difference in price if you ask me. Even when the SFF are their normal price of $460 it's still less than 1/2 the cost to have 3 SFF boxes rather than 1 dual Xeon. I also get a discount at Lenovo...but it appears the discount is much steeper for personal products rather than workstations or servers. ![]() |
