Hi. I am a long time WCG'er with dozens of Windows machines and a handful of Macs. I just downloaded and installed BOINC on Mac Sierra (fresh OS loads) on 3 Macbooks and although it installs fine and initially downloads a few WUs, it just refuses to download and process any more work. Sometimes the machines will download 2-6 WUs (these are 8-core Intel i7), crunch for 5-15 minutes, and then stop and say it was Aborted by Project. I've tried Resetting the projects, rebooting multiple times, having it read the local Prefs, and still BOINC refuses to download more WUs (keeps stating Scheduler Request Pending and communication is deffered 2 mins). Originally I thought maybe the servers were out of WUs (I am processing the 2 Cancer projects) but it's now been 18 hours and my dozens of Windows machines are happily working just fine. It's not the network. The MacOS firewall is disabled. The Project and setup of BOINC looks identical to every other machine that I've set up.
----------------------------------------The one odd thing I noticed is that when I downloaded and installed BOINC from the WCG site last night, later in the day the Notices tab told me there was a 7.8.4 update. I then looked the About for BOINC and it was 7.2.42 which is eons old from 2013. This occured on all 3 problem Macs. I can still see both downloads in the Downloads folder so I'm not crazy. :) I downloaded 7.8.4 and upgraded and BOINC now tells me it is on 7.8.4. I've Googled around and can't find anything relevant to solving this. The Macs are not sleeping and I have installed Insomniax to ensure they don't sleep. My guess is the 7.2.42 is/was very old and mucked something up...but I have no idea how to properly and thoroughly uninstall BOINC on the Mac to later reinstall 7.8.4. Or I experienced a very rare glitch with the servers over the past 18 hours. I powered one of the Macs off for a few hours and now it has magically downloaded tons of WUs and is crunching...EDIT: now after 10+ mins, all the WUs have been deleted except for 1 which is at 100% and the Status is Aborted By Project. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Now, I am a Mac novice...so if you are going to tell me to "clean up ____" or other troubleshooting, I will need step-by-step instructions please. I have no fear of Terminal...but again, would need the exact syntax and/or steps to go hunting for something. Thank you very much in advance! ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ericinboston at Nov 20, 2017 5:12:25 PM] |

For starters, set both the Activity menu options for CPU and Network to Always. If things start up, we'll work back from that, AND, of course like to see the full event log, so to read the client's 'thinking'.

Yes, I should have stated that I already have it set to run 100% so I know it should be working...

What about the requested event log?
----------------------------------------Sierra/High Sierra will be needing 7.8.3/4, and anyway, 7.2.42 are unlikely to work properly on these latest macOS's (I can hardly care about what ancients WCG keeps peddling... a tech wrote a longer while ago they were overdue, understatement, to upgrade, and I know WCG is actively involved in the development of a forthcoming 7.8.n client :O) [Edit 1 times, last edit by SekeRob* at Nov 20, 2017 5:26:14 PM] |

Why the received tasks were aborted is unclear, the "no longer usable" suggests they were very old (did you clone from a backup?) , but since it was a new machine, 8 threads at that, it appears to have used up its initial allowance...
----------------------------------------This computer has finished a daily quota of 5 tasks Meaning, having to wait for a new WCG day. If then work is send and a result is returned, the quota will be raised quickly, but it remains a eye roller for a new octo to only get an initial 5. I noticed the quota too....so you're telling me that WCG maxes out at 5 WUs per day? I have never, ever seen/heard of a quota and I've been running WCG for 10 years. In a few hours it will have been 24 hours...hopefully that will clear it out. I will check my Stats in a few hours and see if these new Macs all have returned 5 WUs.
----------------------------------------Thanks. ![]() |

The emphasis is on 'initial allowance'

Might be nothing
----------------------------------------Try moving the device to a different profile (if you use more than one). I had issues like that 2 wks ago with linux. ![]() ![]() |

The emphasis is on 'initial allowance' I don't see anything in the log about "initial allowance"...it says "daily quota" which is a bit absurd and again, I've never seen before. I also have never seen BOINC/WCG ever cap me at X WUs a day...either on the very first day after installation or otherwise. That would also seem pretty counterintuitive to the whole point of BOINC projects. My money is that the Macs are somehow to blame...whether it's a BOINC bug or WCG bug or Sierra bug. BOINC and WCG work on every Windows install I've ever used since Windows XP (over 100 installs)...Xeon and consumer chips, Intel and AMD, GPUs and no GPUs. I install on 3 2015-model MacBooks (I have it working fine on a 2017 iMac) and they all fail. Sorry to sound so cynical. I told the Project to update and it downloaded about 25 WUs...let's see if they crunch. This happened on one of my Macs a few hours ago...they crunched to about 85% (several hours) and then they all disappeared. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ericinboston at Nov 21, 2017 12:43:03 AM] |
