Antibiotics during pregnancy and the link to a baby’s immune system.

Antibiotic use during pregnancy can increase a child’s risk of being hospitalised with infection by almost 20 per cent.

Future studies will investigate the use of pre- and probiotics to ameliorate these effects.

Gut Bacteria Influence Effectiveness of a Type of Immunotherapy

The types and diversity of bacteria in the gut influence whether a patient will benefit from a type of immunotherapy used to treat cancer, according to three new studies.

Using mouse models of cancer, the researchers also found that altering the overall composition of gut bacteria, know as the gut microbiome, could affect whether tumors responded to checkpoint inhibition.

How the microbiome challenges our concept of self

Today, the three classical biological explanations of the individual self-the immune system, the brain, the genome-are being challenged by the new field of microbiome research.

Gut microbe drives autoimmunity

A team led by Dr. Martin Kriegel at Yale Univesity investigated whether microbes breaching the gut barrier were involved in autoimmune disease.

Researchers found that a certain gut microbe can trigger autoimmune disease in mice that are prone to such disease and identified the same microbe in people with autoimmune diseases.

Re: Interesting News Articles About Microbiome

This is the big hope for the field, that microbes could be a new form of medicine. It is known as using "bugs as drugs".

Wiping out the gut microbiome could help with heart failure: Tracing the surprising connections between the gut, immune system and heart failure

The bacteria that reside on and within our bodies are known to have a significant influence on our health. New research suggests wiping out the gut microbiota could improve heart functioning and potentially slow the cardiac damage that occurs with heart failure.

Antibiotics given to babies may reduce effectiveness of vaccinations by changing their gut microbiome.

"It appears that antibiotics in the first year of life change the way the body builds immunity – and responds to vaccination," says David Lynn, lead on the research team from Australia's Flinders University.

At this stage, the research has only been confirmed in animal models, but it found that mice exposed to antibiotics displayed reduced immune responses to five vaccines routinely administered to infants. The vaccines studied included ones for meningitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis and whooping cough.
