T7600 Server Overheating Processors

Hello Community,

I recently Purchased a Dell T7600 w/ DUAL CPU E5-2630 @2.3Ghz, 16gb Mem, For a Home Business That stays Active 24/7. I have Downloaded and Used the BOinc Off and on over the Years and would like to Contribute again.

My problem is that the Processors jump to around 140 F with in a few Mins of the BOinc Manager starting. The Box has 9 Fans All replacing the Original Stock Fans, including the 60MM fan that is on the Heatsink for Each Processor.

The Box itself stays in a relatively cool environment and i have never gotten the Processors that hot while Crunching Numbers for work. I have also never used the CPU's at 100% for hours.

Can anyone Give me Suggestions on MODS, Heatsinks, Type of Fans, Ect. That i can look into that could help with This overheating problem?

Thank you, ZneoFreak

Hi!

I wouldn't say overheating. The TDP on those CPUs are 95W and max Tcase is 77.4C / 171F. So you should be fine and is expected if you do not have super duper cooling.
Keep crunching!

Thank you for the Response andgra, I will keep an eye on it and Reset my Warnings to allow for a Higher Temp. ^_^

Re: T7600 Server Overheating Processors

T7600 is a tower or a rackmount? If tower, you should be able to find larger heatsinks for the processors. If the heatsink is so small that it can only fit a 60MM fan, maybe it just needs a bit taller of a heatsink to dissipate heat faster.

Also, just a thought. Since you say that all other components remain relatively cool in comparison, you might want to pull the heatsinks off, wipe off the old thermal paste, and reapply some new stuff. It may just be that the old stuff has dried out, or maybe there is too much from the previous application. More is not better in this case. Just a thin coating along the top of the processor to mate it up with the heatsink is all you need. Max temps might be 171F, but if it were my system, I would want to drop the temps down a bit to be more comfortable.

Edit: when applying thermal paste, an old business card, or an old credit card to scrape it across the top lightly has worked great for me. Also, I don't like thermal pads. I feel the paste has done much better for me in the past, so that is what I stick with now.

T7600 is a tower or a rackmount? If tower,

The "T" series are towers. I have a T7400 and runs in the 60C range, but you can certainly hear the fans. Make sure the case fans are not blocked in any way. You need good airflow through the case.
Cheers

All these years I never differentiated between what the R and the T stood for. That's a big duh on my part.

Re: T7600 Server Overheating Processors

joneill003: It is a Full Size Tower, And Reapplying Thermal goo was my first thought. It was well Maintained for the 2 Years be4 it was Retired and i Purchased it for my Home Business. The Case Could be Large Enough to add Dual Liquid Cooled CPU Radiators, Then i would never have to worry about it.

Sgt.Joe: First thing i did after Buying the Box is Replace all the Original Stock Fans with Higher CFM Fans, Using a 8 Way Fan HUB to power them Trough a SATA power Plug and not the Motherboard.

Thank you for your Suggestions and comments ^_^

Re: T7600 Server Overheating Processors

So as a little update, I have had no Work Projects, and BOinc has been running Specified Via "Web Based" for over 24 hours. The Processors have been running pretty steady at 69 C / 156 F, And joneill003 Stated The Processors is rated for 171 F / 77 C.

So if my current BOinc projects are taking up to 7 hours, Would it Reduce the time If i had a better Cooling System on the Dual Xeon e5-s630, T7600?

Since you are not overheating, I doubt that your CPU's are being throttled. Therefore better cooling would not result in lesser times.
