Boinc in the past was very reliable -- and quiet. Now for the past year or possibly longer, Boinc sounds like a meat grinder. Where are the old versions that worked properly? Thanks.

Actually, BOINC is silent, it makes no noise I have ever heard. Perhaps the fan on your computer is going bad. If the bushing has worn out, the fan will make a growling noise until it fails completely. Cheers

What version are you running & on what OS? Is it the WCG version? Here are BOINC downloads: - https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php |

All all the hosts that I have it installed, BOINC just works fine. Or I would not get permission to use it on a lot of customer computers...The only issue is that some WCG projects have higher demands on the hard drive usage (CEP2 for example) but as the software as such doesn't make any noise, it is much rather an issue that you might have aging hardware that needs to be taken care of instead... Thanks for all the responses to my posting regarding Boinc. My computers have no problems with fans or anything else except Boinc. I am running Windows 7 to 10 on the computers and Boinc makes noise on every one of them. Deleting Boinc, the problem goes away. I have been very careful to download the correct Boinc on each. I have not installed Linux on any of them but in the past had no problems with Linux and Boinc and may have to go back to Linux. It seems like the problem with Boinc began with Windows Vista. Anyway, there is a lot of work on my Boinc but it had to be deleted, so none of it will be worked as I had hoped.

Have these machines been running for several years? Maybe the problem is dust bunnies accumulating within the machines impeding airflow and thus CPU cooling as well as worn fan bearings.. What is is the BOINC CPU utilization setting? At 100% many machines will tend to over-heat, driving the fans harder, if the air-flow is inadequate. BOINC works the CPU much harder than most applications and thus will show up a problem that is not induced by other programs. BOINC driving the CPU much harder produces more heat that must be transferred from the CPU to the air within and then expelled from the case.
----------------------------------------Suggest you install a utility program to check the CPU temperature. Also, would be useful to gradually reduce the percentage of CPU time allocated to BOINC to see the affect this has on the noise. Open the machines up and check for dust bunnies and fans spinning freely. Any filters or grills need cleaning? In addition, check whether the gaps between the fins of the CPU heat-sink have become blocked with gunk. While the covers are off, and the machine running BOINC, you should be able to determine the source of the noise. Here every machine has a yearly 'spring clean' and any fans starting to become noisy are replaced. Often find that a fan with a worn bearing is more noisy when starting from cold. The noise will die down, but not disappear completely, as the system warms up.

Take the side panel off the computer in question then run and listen.
----------------------------------------Now load Boinc and run again and listen again..... What type of noise is it? Where is the noise coming from? An aid to determining this is a kitchen roll tube. With one end to your ear move the other end around inside the computer. Fans, hard drives and psu's are the most likely culprits to produce noise when rig is under load Reducing the load with less cores or less time may work if everything is more noisy. Loading coretemp or similar can show you cpu temps. These may be improved by a fresh application of tim between cpu and cooler ![]() |

Maybe the Dust-bunnies thread needs a reboot. :))))
