Add ability to exclude projects for a specific Device Profile

I think having the ability to exclude Projects from specific devices would be helpful.

I think this would be easiest by allowing a Device Profile to use the Default Profile Project list and settings by reference (as an option). I would then add the ability to exclude existing Projects at the Device Profile level.

I want to prevent Projects that have long runs and tight deadlines from certain of my devices as they have a bad habit of arriving Too Late. I don't want to waste the time that could be used elsewhere.

I know I can list everything but the one with the problem, but that doesn't allow me to prefer a Project and get other WU when that Project runs dry without the risk of getting WU that will get no credit while consuming a large amount of Run-time.

My specific problem is exacerbated by running the CPUs at less than 100% duty cycle and the BOINC client doesn't handle deadline detection correctly in this case. I have already reduced the cache size severely with local overrides, but I still get WU that would be late without manual intervention.

Re: Add ability to exclude projects for a specific Device Profile

Hello Traveller,

From the WCG webpage you can exclude projects within a device profile, and then apply that profile to specific devices.

Configure the profile: Settings > Device Manager > Device Profiles > select a profile (such as “home”) > under Available Projects, uncheck the projects to exclude > Save

Assign the profile: Settings > Device Manager > select the specific device > change the Current Assigned Device Profile to the profile you configured > Save

I indicated in my fourth paragraph that I know this, and that it does not allow what I am asking/suggesting.

Re: Add ability to exclude projects for a specific Device Profile

Many times before was asked for a 'Not' field (e.g. to never get CEP2 as alternate when selected projects have run a little dry). The techs are very aware of the need to redesign the whole project selection section, except...

Re: Add ability to exclude projects for a specific Device Profile

You are correct that there is no way to set preferences (weighting) across projects, rather you either opt in or out. In the profiles area, you can also deselect "If there is no work available for the project(s) I have selected above, please send me work from another project" which may help keep the larger units (FAH2 or HSTB) from showing up on your system at all. (Still not what you are looking for, but may help.)

(Edit: While there are likely technical and business arguments against this, I would like to be able to configure profiles with settings such as:

Let WCG manage project priority. (default)
Let me manage project priority. Each project can then be set “0-100%” to designate the makeup of work units in a device’s queue, with the sum across projects totaling 100%. “0%” still allows work units when no other units are available, but a setting of “NOT” would keep a specific project’s work units out of that device’s queue.)
