Thread: CPU at 100% but not at max frequency |

Rather than comment in the many threads about overheating and the cpu running at 100% I thought it best to start a new thread as this is kind of interesting.
I'm running a Sony Vaio laptop with a 1.2 GHz athlon and 512 MB ram; however, when I check the system properties it registers at either 600 MHz or 996 MHz. When I start doing running other cpu intensive apps it jumps up to the full 1.2 GHz and as soon as they're done it goes down. I don't know what I did to acheive this but I'm liking it because my laptop stays cool. Hopefully others are seeing the same thing and we can try to find out why some are behaving differently. If I'm not mistaken, the dif in Mhz, is a power saving feature. Low load, low Mhz = low power used = longer battery life, High load, High Mhz = dead battery.

What I don't understand is how it can be considered low load when the cpu is at 100%. Also I'm running off A/C power. I remove my battery when I know it won't be used for a long time.
