Since I am not willing to push everybody to Linux (even if I prefer Linux), in terms of environmental protection, it is more than necessary to improve such science or to recommend to not select it for non Linux machines. At the other side, I was not aware (did not check it and maybe missed the info) that the new science is not VINA-based. Based on the raw CPU performance, I am still considering that we face a performance issue; and performance issues represent efficiency issues. Based on the number of hosts computing for WCG, the negative impact on the EP consumption is not negligible. Cheers, Yves --- PS: The other way would be to provide clear affinity recommendation to the members between science, CPU, and OS. I moved to Linux on my dedicated machines largely for VINA and similar differences on other projects, so I appreciate you concerns for efficiency. But it is really whether it is worth the electrical power for the value of the science gained. We really don't know. It could be worth it for both Windows and Linux, or not worth it for either. Even if there is a 50% difference between the two, that is not likely to make the difference. Just upgrade to the next generation CPU, and you could achieve a comparable savings. |

----------------------------------------regarding IT and its (poor) energy efficiency, I feel terrible. IT power needs and consumption increased dramatically within the last 20 years and it seems that nobody does really take care of it. At one side, everybody is encouraged to move to LED lighting devices for limiting the EP consumption and at the other side SaaS based solutions, streaming, and even poorly efficient operating systems are still distributed without any consideration and concerns. It is probably nice to have (here in Europe) this energy efficiency ranking (A to G) for any type of devices from fridge to car, over TV, washing machine, etc. and at the same time nobody does take care of the real environmental foot print of IT system: replacing a PC because the new Windows version is more demanding, replacing a mobile phone device because the new android version requires more RAM, overloading the network connections because Android push regularly updates of uninstallable (google) services, ... At least, I would appreciate that WCG and in particular the supported sciences would take more care on this issues. I know, I am a naive, idealist utopian. It is also one of the reasons for me for asking for raspbian support for the Raspberry Pi instead of Android. |

----------------------------------------The science engine (rosetta **) behind this beta is discussed up in this thread. Doubtlessly the techs try to bring the performance on par between platforms and eventually will find the best libraries they can use, and else the members will bring it to the attention of the coders, armstrdj foremost it seems on this science. In past the HCC1 got highlighted and fixed, in fact the scale turned the other way :O ** it's as sure as sure can be, else a very elaborate decoy was developed as even the result log is very much mirroring what's seen at Rosetta@home. Not a fan boy, as then when this science ran here before it gave various issues, to include developing an FAQ how to restart a hung task (which happened frequently), without losing progress on the other concurrently running tasks (actually it is equally usable to all hung sciences). The version of engine will have evolved quite a bit, no doubt, no hung tasks reported till now, but the test is small so far, nothing comparable to production, the true test of tests. I run Rosetta a lot, and am always a little nervous about it too. They do really great science, but they have a lot of different experimenters mucking around with their code and coming up with different experiments. But IBM's expertise is getting them to standardize their stuff, so maybe it will work. PS - Rosetta does fairly well on Windows.
