It turns out that what I thought was dots moving in a circle are actually a 500 foot view of a group of MS vultures circling their latest prey. I finally rebooted one of my 8-thread I7s on Sunday morning to apply the latest MS fix/feature update. I finally was able to get the machine running again early this afternoon. It looks like I did get the multiple fixes applied but still have the two "feature" updates to apply yet. The machine was royally hung. The only way I could stop it was BRS (hold the power button in until the machine powers down). On restart, it would "recover the installation" and go back to being hung. I had waited a good 10 hours before doing this the first time knowing MS's proclivity for bloatware. As it was late enough in the evening then, I left things running only to find things unchanged early this afternoon. Okay, even MS is not THAT bad. Started googling. After some reading, unplugged the printer cable from the USB port on my KVM switch and BRS'd the machine again. This time, the restart referred to "recovering previous Windows installation" (not an exact quote). Machine rebooted itself and then starting showing the percent complete number, eventually reaching 100 percent and the machine was alive again. Never had a Windows update hang like that before but I think this is only the second or third "feature" update. During that part of the process, it appears that the update process can uninstall some device drivers and then reinstall them later in the process. More than one hit I found on Google mentioned unplugging any USB connections during an update. I expect I'll be doing that on any future "feature" updates. FWIW, the current update on that machine says that it is downloading the first "feature" update and is just now at 24 percent. I expect it will be Wednesday morning before I could consider attempting to install it. Then there's the second "feature" update. I admit Win10 is the first MS OS I found myself actually liking. I have NEVER liked the way the update process works. For a pure fix update, you can't apply it when it is convenient for you. MS, in it's "infinite wisdom" (aka their institutionalized arrogance) know better what you need and leave it for you to find your machine sitting at the Windows logon screen. Yes, I didn't like their update process in Win10 before, now I have progressed to downright loathing. I really do not like not being given an option on the update as well. On the other hand if M$ left it open for everyone to choose, then many/most would not get around to it and many many machines would be vulnerable to and infected with virus and worms. Causing MS and us users as a community many more problems. We collectively have to take the distasteful medicine for our collective laziness. |

I really do not like not being given an option on the update as well. On the other hand if M$ left it open for everyone to choose, then many/most would not get around to it and many many machines would be vulnerable to and infected with virus and worms. Causing MS and us users as a community many more problems. We collectively have to take the distasteful medicine for our collective laziness. Coding to the lowest common denominator - typical of M$ (and too many companies these days). I can understand not wanting to let someone put off fixes and security updates indefinitely, especially in light of the data breaches we are having to live with these days. Still, can't they at least PRETEND to have the slightest modicum of respect for us as users and recognize that, JUST MAYBE, we might have something running on a machine that we really would rather NOT have interrupted? Yea, and Diogenes would be successful in his search in Washington too! Just give me a few days over which to pick a time that is convenient for me. If I don't, go install it in your normal arrogant way. |
