I have noticed that the Rosetta program appears to execute slower when run as a screen saver than it does when run in a window. Does anyone know why this might be?

It is a well known fact that running any Windows screensaver takes a toll on your CPU time (unless you just have the blank screen). By virtue of the fact that this project uses the processor at 100 percent when the computer is not busy with other calculations, coupled with a 3D representation of the protein, the computer is running extra cycles to simply draw this picture.
I suggest you change your computer to make sure only the blank screensaver is selected, and turn off the welcome screen and password (if you can). Cheers. JnKFam |

This shouldn't be an issue if you have a video card in your computer. That way, the video card deals with the images rather than your CPU. I have a 128 MB ATI Radeon 9200 on my computer. Not the best nowadays, but still very good. There's not going to be any silly slowdown for my screen saver. ;)

Also, for those who wish to save energy make sure to turn off your monitor....it takes up a lot of juice-

Having a standalone video card vs. an integrated video card has no bearing on the slowness of the client during screensaver mode. It's all about processes. When the screensaver is running, it takes a higher priority than the actual processing thereby causing a slowdown in the actual time it takes to process. The best result is always to run the client in the background, as a service, without any GUI interface.
