Hi All,
I am building a new machine to do various BOINC jobs, this project being one of them, having blown the last one! What should I be making sure my CPU / memory includes please? So far I have from Einstein that the more cores, the better, and also to try and include quad core RAM. Just wondered if this would be the same here or whether there were other aspects to the running of the programs. Thanks in advance LL |

The AMD Ryzen 1700 is quite good. 8 cores/16 threads and a rather low price.

Time .... to use the computer ....
having a bit of ram ... say 6gb + good development support for the feature sets of the computer .... a fast hard disk with cache for evample the west gate HD are great solids and samsung have epic level SSD solid state disks... (256mb per sec transfers...) http://bit.ly/2Cerius |

Thanks in advance LL using more cores, give you more badges on WCG... but on all other projects, they only calculate by RAC numbers! check the fastest processors there...  |

I can help a little bit with some info. The quad core ram is actually "quad channel" ram, this depends on the motherboard to support it. It means you will install 4 sticks of ram instead the typically two sticks. Quad channel can be expensive for the ram. Depending on your budget, the new Ryzen cores look very promising at this time. If you want greater output you will have to look at really expensive Intel cpus. One other consideration you want to keep in mind is how much power (electricity) will be used. I think this is where the more cores the better. I have a Ryzen 1700(16 threads) and an Intel 4790k(8 threads). The i7 runs faster(4 gh) than the 1700(3 gh). The 1700 returns more work units than the i7 in a given amount of time due to the difference of the number of threads for about the same amount of electricity. One important rule about building a new computer is to not cheap out on the power supply. And don't buy a high wattage supply unless you really need it. Most Boinc computers can get by with a 400-450 watt ps. The 80+ rating can make a difference both in power usage by the computer but also in the cost of keeping the computer environment cooler. Higher the rating the better. I hope this helps. dondee |

Many thanks for all your input. I like the Ryzen 7 but there is no workstation board yet. I think it will be with us in 3 months so I'll hold out. The Intel 8 cores are very expensive.
