Invalids on FAH2

In the last few weeks I have been picking up Invalids on some of my tasks. Before that, I had never seen an Invalid on my machine. It appears that I have been getting hours and credits for those tasks, so my results must still be useful. Does anyone have any idea what causes these Invalids and what that means?

An Example:
FAH2_ 000957_ zinc01841268_ 000008_ 0007_ 027_ 1-- Office-Lenovo Invalid 2/26/17 23:25:26 2/28/17 07:29:24 10.46 / 10.54 357.9 / 269.6

Thanks

Re: Invalids on FAH2

In my experience, the most common cause of Invalid results is a hardware problem, but then, I overclock my computers and run them with only just enough CPU core voltage for the speed at which they are running.
If you're not overclocking, an overheating problem could be the cause, so check your air vents, CPU heatsinks and fans.
Faulty RAM can also be a culprit, but will probably cause your O/S to crash too. It can be very nasty if it causes the O/S disk cache contents to become different to what is on or should be on your HDD, as your HDD will become corrupt too if the corrupted cache contents are written to it.

If it's a hardware problem, the Invalids could be expected to become more frequent over time as the hardware degrades.

Occasionally WCG sends out bad WUs, in which case your wingmen will get Invalids too, so keep examining the WCG website entries for your Invalids to see whether that is the case. - HTH

Re: Invalids on FAH2

tmedve, although it may not actually make any difference, I'd try rebooting your machine - as that may reset things, thus removing the issue. At least then, you'd be starting off from a clean point to investigate from if that doesn't resolve the issue.

Quick question, does it occur on other sciences?

Re: Invalids on FAH2

I'm not catching many FAHB-WUs (10 in February) and only the tenth WU (the last one of FAHB in that month) that I crunched (name ending in _0-- below) went Invalid, whereas other WCG-projects don't have Invalids.

I don't quite know if it has anything to do with the upload server problems ("transient HTTP error"), so that trickle messages may not have reached the upload server in the right sequence.

Re: Invalids on FAH2

I have rebooted and this does not happen in other sciences. I should have posted the results of the other related tasks, but they look remarkably like those that adriverhoef posted. ie: mine is Invalid and there is another that is Valid. Both of those tasks received credit. I can't post what the other tasks did in my case since they have fallen off of my views.

I am off FAH2 for a little while anyhow and working on HST1 and SCC.

Re: Invalids on FAH2

For the past 3 days I have accumulated 24 FAH2 Invalids on two of my desktops. Over the course of 9months of crunching I have only had a handful of invalids,

I have rebooted them, vacuumed the fan intakes, and air exit. They are unmodified I3 & i5 running Windows 10 64 bit. They are dedicated to WGC work so I did not have anything else running.

The workunits are the large FAH2 ( 10+ hrs each) list below:

Is this something that has happened before with FAH2?

Re: Invalids on FAH2

I have found the cause for invalids on my system have invariably been some internet problem which impedes the timely reporting of the trickles. Check to see if you have some intermittent hiccuping on your connectivity.
Cheers

Re: Invalids on FAH2

I will check. I have a hardwired ethernet connection. By trickles do you mean the upload transfers after the work is completed? I have watched the transfers in the Advanced View the FAH2 have many more entries than other completed WU. The FAH2 transfer usually is completed in a minute or so.

Re: Invalids on FAH2

Trickles are little uploads that give the latest update on the status of the FAH2 WU in progress. There is also a file that is uploaded when the UW is 100% completed, but these smaller "trickles" need to be sent in the correct order. If, for example, my PC is only given limited internet access, then the files are uploaded in whatever order they happen to upload. This out of sync causes the servers to say the work completed is incorrect/invalid.

With that in mind, make sure your hardwired ethernet is turned on 24/7 . Go to View/Advanced view, then Activity/Network activity always.

EDIT: I should add, these trickles are useful as it gives the researchers the date created by your computer, even if you are unable to finish the WU. 60% done? No problem. 30% done? Still useful. And then the servers make the next WU based on how much of the WU your computer was able to complete.

The downside and complaint is that trickles given out of order = invalid. As most of my machines have limited internet access, I cannot use those computers to participate in this project.

Re: Invalids on FAH2

Thanks Seoul & Sgt Joe for splaining that for me. Are trickles unique to FAH2 or are they also associated with other "large" WU's?

This is my problem. I need to buy an ethernet switch since I have been manually switching the last available output of my router between the computers as they approach completion. I guess I have gotten away with it for the past 30days since getting the second desk top, because other projects have been running on the two desktops . Until I get the switch, I will put FAH2 on my three laptops with wireless connections.

Stupid me, delaying the purchase of a $20 switch cost me 10+ days of FAH2. Although I did see that I have got to keep up on cleaning fan intakes with a 3 cat household.
