Hello, fellow crunchers!
----------------------------------------Since I haven't read mention of this yet, I thought it appropriate to point out that Intel's latest Kaby Lake Pentium CPUs all feature hyperthreading, which in my experience leads to a pretty substantial boost in WCG performance thanks to the enhanced scheduling. This means that a budget cruncher can basically get into i3 territory for about $70, potentially making crunching at the low end more worthwhile. See for yourselves here: https://ark.intel.com/products/97143/Intel-Pe...r-G4560-3M-Cache-3_50-GHz Speaking of Kaby Lake, what are your thoughts on the i3-7350K for crunching? Do you think it's worth it? Do you think you're better off with a locked i5 at the same price, or an unlocked i5 for ~$60 more? Finally, there's Ryzen. What are your hopes for crunching potential, price, etc.? I know this is sort of an unorganized, rambly post covering a couple of topics, but I'd just like to hear some thoughts on the upcoming CPU market. Happy crunching! Newer CPUs with more cores and lower power usage is always better. Hopefully AMD will have a more competitive product for all our pocket books.

The Pentium looks good. At 54 watts and 3.5 GHz and $64. It doesn't appear to support AVX instructions though. No WCG application uses AVX instructions yet so no loss.
The i3-7350k supports AVX instructions when and if the WCG applications do. It also has a 20% higher clock speed and 1MB more cache. But at $170 I would choose the Pentium. Ryzen looks very interesting. As far as I can tell there will be a 6 core/12 thread part at 65 watts. |

When you can have 2 cores & 4 threads for 35W! https://ark.intel.com/products/97465/Intel-Pe...-G4560T-3M-Cache-2_90-GHz Here on WCG, it's all about time...so low wattage is desirable! ;) |

As I and others have told you before, WCG is only about time IF the only thing you care about is badges. Runtime IS NOT an indicator of how much work your CPU is actually doing. I don't care about badges; I care about the work being done, so I will purchase the CPU with the best price to performance within a given budget for a cruncher. If YOU only care about badges, that's okay, but I ask you politely to please stop touting your opinion on runtime/badges all over these forums as though it is fact, because it just isn't. Also, although the retail price of the CPU you linked to should be the same, the reality is that T-series CPUs always end up being far more expensive up front due to their relative rarity compared to the others, and a 19W difference in power consumption isn't going to make up for that difference any time soon. ![]() Crunchers: 1: Xeon E5-2695 v3 @ 2.5GHz turbo (14C/28T) 2: Xeon E5-2658 v3 @ 2.3GHz turbo (12C/24T) 3: Ryzen 7 1700 @ 3.675GHz OC (8C/16T) 4: Core i7-4700MQ @ 3.2GHz cTDP up (4C/8T) |

OK, you have your view!
----------------------------------------But still not sure how i3-7350K is compared to your older CPUs you have listed in signature...maybe you should check RAC for a new CPU, before getting it?! |

The last I've heard is 3/3 for the release of AMD's Ryzen.
