Hi,
using boinc-client 7.6.33 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu on Debian (stretch), I found out that my client would not compute tasks anymore. I subscribed to the following projects: - OpenZika - Help Stop TB - Outsmart Ebola Together - Mapping Cancer Markers I got help from the boinc forum, and tried, as suggested, to switch back from Linux kernel 4.8 to 4.7. Please see this post for details. The boinc client could then work as expected. My question is: is it a well know temporary issue? If yes, could you point me to a documentation/FAQ I did not see ? Thanks a lot, and best regards. Dimitri |

There's zero compatibility issue with any kernel versions through 4.9 for WCG sciences (I know because my test platform has been stepping through many kernel builds under Ubuntu 16.04 LTS starting at 4.4 LTS), but there is an issue with certificates in certain Debian versions for which an FAQ exists is the community maintained FAQs forum. https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,38805

All 17 of my systems are using the 4.8 kernel and have been since October... All work perfectly fine on all projects..
----------------------------------------Update: One system is still 4.4 due to a possible firmware issue that impacts CPU scheduling on this one XEON processor. WCG still runs without errors, just not optimally. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Doneske at Jan 5, 2017 11:44:37 PM] |

Hi,
Ok, I looked at the FAQ about the Debian issue, and tried the workaround replacing the ca-bundle.crt file for the client, even if this openSSL issue has been fixed about 6 months ago. I did not succeed. Moreover, the issue those people had was: BOINC: Peer certificate cannot be authenticated I do not have this error message. It might not be a kernel incompatibility issue, but it does not seem to be a certificate issue either b/c I would have the same problem when using version 4.7 of the kernel. For the moment I don't know the cause of this problem. |

For the moment I don't know the cause of this problem. More than likely, it is the disabling of vsyscall emulation in Debian's 4.8 kernel: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_threa...886&nowrap=true#80855 If you search the changelog, you will see it was disabled in kernel 4.8.4-1 and re-enabled in kernel 4.8.15-1 https://launchpad.net/debian/+source/linux/+changelog |

Hi BobCat13,
thanks for your precious help, this is in fact the issue! As stated in the changelog you refer to, simply adding the kernel parameter vsyscall=emulate solves the problem. Best regards, Dimitri |
