Hi all,
I have several computers that have 4 memory slots for a total of 16gbs. At present I have 8gbs installed. Will increasing the ram to the full 16gbs increase speed or am I just wasting my money on the extra ram. tks |

Wasting money, mostly, all depending on how many cores/hyperthreads are in the CPU. One exception is the Clean Energy science. Count on 1GB per concurrent tasks, or the comp drowns in diskswapping, otherwise your 8GB is more than enough.
Now, that said, if you want to run BOINC in a RAMdrive, then you can't get enough memory. Search forums for past discussions on this topic. |

Thank you. My cpu's are all duel core. I was thinking of getting some 4 core or 8 core cpus but didn't know if that would speed up anything.

You have more than enough.... this 24 core hyperthreaded machine is using 43% of the 16Gb is has.....
If I closed firefox, probably closer to 35%. |

Getting more cores would definitely get you more points and runtime!
----------------------------------------With ubuntu you need very little ram. I'm running 24 thread machines with 8GB, 4 cores with 4GB. The only project which uses lots of ram is CEP, but normally each of your PCs get only one CEP unit at a time. So the memory consumption is like this: 1x CEP 1GB 3x other projects, 50-100MB per project -- 1.3 GB for 4 cores/threads 1x CEP 1GB 23x other projects -- 3.3 GB for 24 cores/threads If you use windows, you will need a bit more RAM, but 8GB is more than enough. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by fuzzydice555 at Oct 29, 2016 3:10:02 PM] |

This may help you to determine how much ram is being used:
http://superuser.com/questions/482178/how-can...or-my-computers-ram-usage I am running mapping on an eight thread machine with Linux (windows uses more ram) and the ram used for the os and programs is at 3.2gb. 8 gb should be more than enough for a dual core. |
