anyone following the 'immortality' front?

there are people out there claiming that aging is just a disease that can be cured, or that it can be prevented.

Re: anyone following the 'immortality' front?

It can't be cured.... yet.
There is lots of info out there,
apparently Dole of dole pineapple fame spent millions.
He made it to the 90's but so did Gramma and she was broke.
(Ok my gramma only made it to the 80s I'm just making a point)
Apparently our cells have telemores (can't spell it)ok, it's telomeres.
Here's a sample article...
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3370421/

And, unlike so many others who just put link,
if you don't wanna link here's a summary from the article.

Telomere length shortens with age. Progressive shortening of telomeres leads to senescence, apoptosis, or oncogenic transformation of somatic cells, affecting the health and lifespan of an individual. Shorter telomeres have been associated with increased incidence of diseases and poor survival. The rate of telomere shortening can be either increased or decreased by specific lifestyle factors. Better choice of diet and activities has great potential to reduce the rate of telomere shortening or at least prevent excessive telomere attrition, leading to delayed onset of age-associated diseases and increased lifespan.

Soooooo..... If they figure out how to keep the telomeres from shrinking ageing could be slowed/stopped. Eventually things are gonna wear out though.
Most of the men in my family die around 60,
some that led healthier lives made it to the 80s.
Myself the clock is ticking, trying to take supplements and eat more veggies...
I'm fairly sure I'm not making it to 80,
but hey come up with a WCG project to prevent ageing and I'll get a 5 year badge on it biggrin

there's also a CEO, that has tried out this: http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/a...-Anti-Aging-Gene-Therapy/

& from what I know, our body regenerates...some tissues quicker, some slower...we're never than 7y older, starting from our 25th birthday! wink
so, have personally found a way to be in mid 30...but look younger than mid 20! & no, didn't do any therapy...but secret is out there, search for it!

Yes their ilk are populated by a rash of Venture Capital "gods" that think their sheer genius needs to be perpetuated on forever. Robotize or outsource all meaningful employment, and then lord over what is left forever.

There may have been immortal bacteria. And other things evolved to use them as a food source. Antibiotic resistant bacteria are still evolving. Even if we were immortal some microbe would evolve to feed on us. Or we'd get run over by a bus.

halfcard, you need a few doses of Proxofim, which also promises to improve the growth of the fur on your head [it does so very well in mice ;o]

No, I don't follow this particular science, the side-benefit seeming to be on the front of treating late stage cancer patients. Articles in a publication called Cell.

If somebody read the story, he will know it's a short SF story, so long time ago...

Which came to be a theater drama in the last part of the 20th century...

& then it became a film:
