Re: CPU Usage - lots of spikes

The point is I have no idea of what is best for my systems. I myself would like to set a very high core temp. On the other hand my father thinks 60ºC and not more is OK. So, I think I'll use his opinion as a shortcut (better not tell him about this link I've just posted, because I suppose he'd drop from the initial 80ºC and then 60ºC to those 45ºC).

There is something that puzzles me:

with CPU @ 50/100 and TThrottle with 60 as the core temp on both laptops,
the core i5 goes to around 87% Running CPU
while the core i7 goes to around 13% Running CPU.
The core i7 is doing double the threads, but still 13% * 2 = 26% << 87% which means the core i7 is contributing much less than the core i5 to WCGrid.
Any clues for explaining this?

Re: CPU Usage - lots of spikes

Tjunc was set on 100ºC. It was I who changed it to 80ºC. Now that I've set it back to 100ºC and set core temp to 60ºC, the CPU temperature is around 60ºC.

You said with TThrottle you have to put BOINC @ 100/100. My father prefers 50/100 and says if I insist on 100/100 he will uninstall BOINC. Auch!

What do you mean with "75-80°C is more than enough for desktop"? Is it that for a desktop 75-80ºC is a good range for setting the core temp? Please note that I'm using BOINC only on laptops.

Also on http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/desktop-pc/...emperature-image-3498564/ I've read:

"In general you should consider 60 degrees Celcius the absolute maximum for long periods, but aim for 45-50 degrees to be safe."

What should I take from this?

well, here's my main rig...not the fastest that I have...but the one I'm mostly using with X3230...Tjunc is about 100°C, while for nVidia it's 127°C!

so, here's how my Tthrotttle goes with 81°C setting:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/sfdi27ydk7ef65a/Scr...08-20%2012.02.29.png?dl=0
my CPU runs 100% of speed on about 74°C, with 100/100 on BOINC...can check it out here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/k05s46a069n1mi1/Scr...08-20%2012.06.45.png?dl=0
if I put your preferred 60°C, watch what happens in Tthrottle (lowered to 60min time frame):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fv1mdndurk06q7v/Scr...08-20%2012.10.19.png?dl=0
so the temp goes down...but also the processes, while I'm still using 100/100 on BOINC time:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/3dau5jg20yzmbak/Scr...08-20%2012.11.24.png?dl=0

So talk to your dad & show him the task manager & Tthrottle...to agree on what temp you want your desktop to operate!
As stated before, I use 81°C on my X3230 proc...but if I set it on 60°C, it will Tthrottle down to 20-40% of CPU use...when it settles to some temp, it will constantly use up to some % of CPU...for example on my old T60 laptop with T7600, it runs now on 50% of CPU with Tthrottle set on 80°C & 100/100 BOINC time!

Also, I'm against the use of BOINC time...why?
If you have some machine, any machine...& you do a "pump up - pump down", it will eventually broke...doesn't matter if it's a electronic circuit, switch of some kind or mechanical device...even though BOINC was made with that setting, I'm not sure it's a good thing to be used for a prolonged periods of time!
Now, if I use 100/100 BOINC time, while setting my temp at bay with Tthrottle (or any other program you want, there are also some)...then it gets constant use of some percentage of CPU...the heat is at bay, so you don't pump heat up & down all the time...stress is at bay, so you don't do a 100% in 1s & 0% in another to get a 50% of time used...& it got my CPUs & GPUs running for 2y in laptops, but after I fried some nVidias with SETi@home - decided 6m ago to use Tthrottle on Win desktops as well...
So it works for me...hope it also works for you!

if you need some more info, feel free to ask more...

Re: CPU Usage - lots of spikes

I've just closed TThrottle and installed Process Lasso with default settings, but couldn't find the core temp setting. Isn't there such a setting on this app?

Re: CPU Usage - lots of spikes

I'm officially on WCGrid Strike. I will not allow any more new tasks on our three laptops before two conditions are met:

1 of 2: You can set a given target temperature for the CPU in a similar way that TThrottle allows for (the so-called core temp), but working at a microsecond level and in a way compatible with hyperthreading (either with a BOINC feature - which would be best - or a third-party application).

2 of 2: You can set the CPU to disable TurboBoost automatically while the laptop is idle (and using a good part of the CPU time on WCGrid) and re-enable it automatically when you start CPU-intensive tasks.

All help is welcome.

Thank you for your time!

Re: CPU Usage - lots of spikes

There is another crude method to regulate temperatures in Windows. With the maximum processor usage in control panel. If set to 99% it won't turbo. With laptops I typically set it to 70%. This will invoke SpeedStep and lower the voltage/heat/noise.

Re: CPU Usage - lots of spikes

Thank you for your input. I've already tested setting maximum CPU time to 99% out of curiosity, but unfortunately that procedure does not address either of the two requirements for me to resume work on WCGrid I've explained.

As I've said before, all help is welcome.

Re: CPU Usage - lots of spikes

Still my post of July 25, TMG is the answer to keeping your CPU set at max performance, then run a smooth lower speed for individual BOINC science processes (It's superior in that not all sciences cause the CPU to equally heat up, so each can be optimized).

And why there is no temp sensor in BOINC itself is like asking the question "Why does TThrottle exist for Windows but not for Linux or OS-X"... it's because the -open source code- must be able to run on all platforms, else it wont stand a chance of being integrated into BOINC.

Re: CPU Usage - lots of spikes

The reason I've not spoken about this earlier is because TM and TMG seemed to me not to be designed for Windows 10. I've opened ThreadMast.exe after unzipping it from tminst112.zip and installed TMG from ThreadMaster_GUI_Setup.exe, but I cannot find the TMG executable. How is it called and where is it?

Does TMG have integrated options to configure BOINC tasks' CPU usage or does it need special configuration for the recognition of those tasks? I have not seen TMG options before and so I have no idea of how to configure it.

And finally, does TMG fulfill the two requirements I've specified earlier?

Thank you for your time!

Re: CPU Usage - lots of spikes

Just for the heck of it, I installed TMG on my 4770 with W10-home 14905, and sure enough, the path is shown where it goes, asks a number of questions such as only for installing user (Access) or everyone, to install various start/desktop icon, and if to launch immediately. Hit the process tab, to pick the a randomly running WCG science, added it, set percent to 10 (which is 80 on an 8 core), and up I am, with a systray icon for quick access.

This runs as a service, so it continues to operate when not signed in, provide BOINC is also installed as service.

For more (re)read the FAQ in the community forum.
