Re: Home PC outperforms a supercomputer?

Think a year or 2 ago I made a post about Belgian scientists who were doing MRI image analysis in 15 minutes using combined GPGPU's in a commercial tower system, which otherwise would have taken 48 hours i.e. what the Russian then replicated by the looks of it in an even cheaper solution.

Re: Home PC outperforms a supercomputer?

Nvidia has just come out with their Pascal GPU using a 16nm process. It will run about 50% faster at the same watts as their Maxwell 28nm GPUs. That is by the specifications. Nvidia likely made some architectural improvements as well. The GPUgrid is waiting to get their hands on one to recompile.

So yes. You can have a supercomputer in your home. The nvidia GTX 1080 has 2560 CUDA cores running at 1607 MHz.

Edit:
The GTX 1080 uses 180 watts

The AMD RX 480 is also new using a 14nm process. 2304 stream processors at 1120 MHz. 150 watts.

Just a reminder that one of next projects should be GPU only... ;)

Re: Home PC outperforms a supercomputer?

The nvidia GTX 1060 is expected to be released on July 19. It has 1280 Cuda cores. $249 for the reference design. There will be custom designs on the 19th or shortly thereafter. 120 watts requiring a 6 pin power connector for the reference design or 'Founders Edition'. Note the GPUgrid has yet to recompile. Best guess is 1-2 months.
