sad HST1 CPU Time estimate anomalies

I am trying to understand how HST 1 time remaining can appear as (for instance) 5h 42m before it runs with an estimated 83.4 GFlops, then when running it counts down from this time until reaching about 25 - 35% complete and then suddenly jumps to a more typical 17 - 18h CPU time. There is no change in the size of the task and more importantly there is no change in the % / h figure reported in the properties of the WU.

Clearly a low estimate of time to completion can cause more WUs to be loaded than there is capability of completing leading to 'Too Late' or failure to return errors even iff you have used CPU time to crunch and report.

I'd like to think that this is a potential fault with other projects but it seems consistently bad for HST 1. What with 'Invalid' issues and spurious 'Error' reports, it seems to me that this project needs a major overhaul if potential crunchers are not to leave in disillusionment and frustration. nerd

Re: HST1 CPU Time estimate anomalies

Add section

   <app>
<name>hst1</name>
<fraction_done_exact/>
</app>

to your app_config.xml (many posts explain), and you get a reasonable estimate within several minutes, then slowly adjusting TTC on running tasks.

As there are T000/T001, shorts [but variable lengths], T300/T325/T350 long [but variable lengths], T400 extra long [but variable length too], no predicting how long a task will take, so the running average fpops is included in all task headers, (multiple discussions on this forum too).

Re: HST1 CPU Time estimate anomalies

Agree, they are well off.
My HST1 WU on my laptop currently claiming on finishing at 152hrs not the 6hrs it first claimed.

Re: HST1 CPU Time estimate anomalies

Thanks SekeRob*.

I've searched the forums for reference to app_config.xml and found one of your posts regarding the addition of the <fraction_done_exact/> string but unfortunately I cannot find where this file resides. I exclusively use Apple Mac computers and have looked in Library and App Data Support but no luck so far. Can you give me a clue where to find the file please?

Thanks again

Re: HST1 CPU Time estimate anomalies

If you have it, seems not from your reaction, it is listed in the startup event log and resides in the */projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org folder, a sub of the BOINC data dir, which location is also listed at start of client event log.

The pure ASCII text file app_config.xml for HST1 then needs to contain:
<app_config>
<app>
<name>hst1</name>
<fraction_done_exact/>
</app>
</app_config>

Manual: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Cc_config.xml gives all available tags.

Thanks SekeRob* I'll get on to it as soon as I can.

Tied up with following the BRExit campaign (and vote) at the moment.
