Download for ppc64?

IBM POWER8 chips support Little endian mode. Typically this makes porting applications a lot easier. POWER8 servers support Ubuntu, Suse and Redhat.

I've got a bunch in my lab begging to have community grid installed, just need someone to port the code

but risc/6000 cpu architecteure of P8 server is different from x86 or arm used for android os.

learn aix and virtualization on this perfect hardware and don't waste it with boinc ;)

Re: Download for ppc64?

It's all a question of how many distributed hosts would participate. Sending work to one user who controls all machines represents a, let's say 'continuity' problem in various ways. FYI (Mac) PPC was dropped some years from support, simply because there were not enough wingman to verify results in a timely fashion, regardless of the ease of compiling for the respective platform.

Whilst, if this can emulate x86 / x86_64 code execution, you could maybe run that in a Linux VM, fake the platform with the <alt_platform>recognizethisos</alt_platform> tag and see if you are able to fetch/process a result properly.

P.S For the interested little v big endian: https://www.cs.umd.edu/class/sum2003/cmsc311/Notes/Data/endian.html

Re: Download for ppc64?

It's unfortunate that there's no support for POWER8. I also have a large cluster of these systems that are sitting idle from a cancelled project.

Re: Download for ppc64?

I too am about to take delivery of a number of P8 servers that will have a lot of space cycles. And would like to see the linux client for them.

Re: Download for ppc64?

Hi
There is an alternate way I suceeded in the past. You will have to use Power Lx86 but it is compatible with older version of Linux ppc only. I run it fine a couple of years ago on a Power770 with RHEL 5, Power Lx86 and old WCG agent.
Anyway, it could be great to have Linux ppc agent, many Power systems are sleeping all around the world ...

PowerVM can make your host CPU POWER8 into guest CPU of x86:

Re: Download for ppc64?

Further thought ... add a MHz/Dhrystone's/MIP'S performance per watt to each system ...
then projects will further optimise workloads to improve upon workload energy & environmental efficiency versus work carried out.

Work Hours x Mhz / (efficiency per watt)
-------
Hours / % of projects finished with work completed

Also bear in mind that GPU's need watt efficiency and task management to optimise power used versus work done....

worker priority should always be :

efficiency + merit of the work
--------
time / % necessity
