Glutamine Blocker Project??

Could we please get a new project ASAP to let WCG crunchers help with this??

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-357...ts-eradicates-tumors.html

Are we on the brink of a UNIVERSAL cancer cure? Cutting off key supply routes to starve diseased cells of nutrients 'eradicates tumors'
* Scientists have identified a key supply route that provides cancer cells fuel
* They blocked gateways allowing cells to obtain amino acid, glutamine
* Experts found by blocking glutamine they stopped cancer cells growing
* Raises hopes of universal cancer treatment, because it is a very common mechanism in all cancer cells, scientists say
* And could lead to chemotherapy with less severe side-effects

The key to beating cancer could lie in the ability to cut off vital nutritional supply lines that fuel the disease and allow it to grow, experts have revealed. They have identified a key supply route that diseased cells manipulate, to obtain nutrients. The discovery could herald new treatments that act to stop the growth of tumours, researchers said.

To arrive at their findings, a team from The Australian National University, blocked gateways through which the cancer cell was obtaining the amino acid glutamine. They found the cells almost completely stopped growing. Professor Stefan Bröer, who led the study, said: 'This is likely to work in a wide range of cancers, because it is a very common mechanism in cancer cells.' 'Better still, this should lead to chemotherapy with much less serious side-effects, as normal cells do not use glutamine as a building material. 'Crucial white blood cells, which current treatments damage, could be spared, and it could cut out the hair loss that chemotherapy causes.'

There are 917 different types of cancer currently identified, and many cures work only for a single type of the disease. Futhermore, many treatments are rendered ineffective as cancers develop resistance to chemotherapy. However, Professor Bröer, a biochemist at the university's Research School of Biology, said the new approach would be less prone to resistance because blocking the glutamine transport mechanism is an external process that would be hard for cancer cells to get around. ...

Lead author Angelika Bröer spearheaded the effort to identify and genetically knock out glutamine transporters. 'It is an exciting time to do cancer research,' she said. 'We now have precision tools in our hands to manipulate the genome of cancer cells, allowing us to address problems that were difficult to solve previously.'

Now the importance of glutamine gateways have been identified in cancer, the hunt is on to find drug treatments that will lock them down and kill the disease. Ms Bröer added: 'we have developed a set of tests, which make it very easy to determine if a drug is targeting glutamine transporters. 'This means we can set robots to work that will test tens of thousands of drugs for us over the next year or two.'

The results are published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Re: Glutamine Blocker Project??

Well... send a note to Ms Bröer with the WCG link which should let her know of WCG's capabilities. biggrin

Cancer is very much a western world ailment, in case anyone has missed it.
Diabetes is the number one pathway to cancer, overweight is the number one pathway to diabetes... let's start by fixing that problem at the root... get rid of the sugar additives [described as poison by oncologists and nutritionists over here], and stop shuffling it in through the beak.

Rant End.

Re: Glutamine Blocker Project??

Has anybody thought about running projects here for Dementia and Diabetes, or are these two massive issues simply being resolved by individual Governments via heath advice, and a so called "sugar tax", just a thought but results from WCG could have a huge impact.

I don't think many of the people running WCG projects understand that WCG merely provides computer power to independent researchers and research groups. WCG does not initiate any research projects itself.

I someone knows of anyone studying any of these other projects, they should encourage them to contact WCG to see if WCG can help supply computer support.

Are you commenting to me or cjslman as I don't see any connection to what I wrote.... a non-sequitur.

So happens in the news there was an alert from Bruxelles that the sugar-lobby was winning in the EU... no taxing. Again the consumer is shown to be second fiddle.

Not commenting to you. More of an addendum. Perhaps the following URL is what we need to pass on to those who suggest that WCG needs to include a certain project.

Don't know if you saw this in the news recently but cancer has been around in humans and our ancestors for at least 1.7 million years.

The reason you think of it as a western disease is because people in most parts of the world don't live long enough to have a high probability of getting cancer.

Re: Glutamine Blocker Project??

Personally I would like to see a project that can simulate the cocktail effect of all the food additives and toxins from outher sources (BPA, SLS, Kathon, Phtalates etc) that enter our bodies and what happens when they all are mixed inside of us.

I believe /that/ is a large contributing factor to cancer.

Re: Glutamine Blocker Project??

Well, they are trying to stop "glutamine transponder in cancer cell", not the glutamine itself as it's a one of the primary amino-acids!

On your place (see that it's important to you), I'd write to them about WCG...maybe they do need such infrastructure? ;)
