I want to limit the number of work units in the queue on my laptop. I have gone to tools, computer preferences then disk and memory usage and set to use at most 1 GB of disk space and use at most 5% of total disk space, but I've still have 5 units waiting to run. I have a 4 core CPU and would like to have when one core is finished and up loaded that it would download a new work unit.

Oh, you were so close. Under tools, computer preferences go to network usage. Set your minimum buffer to zero and max additional work buffer to zero. That should do the trick for you.
