After two decades of steady decline, the number of active tuberculosis cases in the U.S. inched up last year. Hall’s was one of 9,563 TB cases reported last year, up from 9,406 cases the year before. The CDC is still trying to determine the reason for the uptick.
----------------------------------------The goal set by the CDC, in 1989, of eliminating TB by 2010 — defined as less than one case in a million people — remains elusive. Even if the trend of declining cases had continued, the United States would not have eliminated TB by the end of this century, the CDC said. We are not yet certain why TB incidence has leveled off, but we do know it indicates the need for a new, expanded approach to TB elimination, said Dr. Philip LoBue, director of the CDC’s Division of Tuberculosis Elimination, in an email. It starts with routine feeding penicillin, including the latest to livestock to cause most all to become ineffective [and other widespread abuse]. You may have missed the news, but near Papua New Guinea is an island where there's now a 100% resistant TB nicknamed "Ebola on wings" or something like that. The healthcare world is scared #$@$less the bug will escape the island [a very high percentage of the population is carrier but does not get sick]. TB and AIDS have become partners... what to expect if a lifetime of drug taking to control HIV in patients with an already weakened immune system? Could TB be picking up smarts from that too?

----------------------------------------I suggest that the "Interesting news about ..." thread in each of the project forums be made sticky. As it is, for projects where interesting news items don't get posted often, the "Interesting news" thread scrolls down off the first page, and people with a new item to post don't see it. Then they start a new thread, as happened here ... [Edit 2 times, last edit by Rickjb at May 18, 2016 6:08:51 PM] |

I'd start promoting a project "Help Stop TB" in that comments...don't have time for a making sign-up for a login...so start promoting "locally", while doing a job - globally in WCG! ;)
