Pentium N3700 review and talk

Hello folks!

I did a search about this processor and find not a single thread so I decided to start one.
I am going to start with my thought and results on this device and here come some background history.

I needed to replace ny old laptop that I used as web server for developing (I have some Wordpress sites what need develop and maintainance on some other place than the live servers) and also something what would be good as htcp.

I bought a Intel NUC (NUC5PPYH) who has the Brodwell Pentium N3700 processor with 4 4 cores (no hyper threads) @ 1.6 ghz base clock and 2.4 Ghz turbo. The processor is classed as a 6W TDP chip.
I already had one 120 Gb Kingston now! SSD and a stick 8Gb 1600 Mhz RAM that i put in it.

As Operating System I installed Ubuntu server 14.04 LTS. I Havent got so far that i use it as media player so the server mostly crunch undisterved 24/7 from begining of December last year till now.

The NUCs little fan made me nuts after 2v 24/7 crunching so i ordered the Akasa newton P case an gave the board a passive cooled new home. Now it is runing 24/7 full crunching on all cores with 0db sound and around 2 degree Celsius cooler.

The core temps have never been over 58 degree Celsius and acording speed mesurment with in OS it is alltime in turbo 2.4 Ghz.

Here is some resent results from it Date/Runtime/Points/Results:

01/22/2016 0:003:12:24:39 10,565 15
01/21/2016 0:003:17:41:47 10,906 12
01/20/2016 0:002:12:09:16 8,261 19
01/19/2016 0:005:07:00:50 14,318 26
01/18/2016 0:005:03:15:16 10,906 12
01/17/2016 0:002:21:46:42 8,332 15
01/16/2016 0:002:22:20:46 8,052 12
01/15/2016 0:003:02:42:37 8,245 12
01/14/2016 0:002:14:07:58 7,116 8
01/13/2016 0:005:21:59:21 13,957 16
01/12/2016 0:001:20:59:29 5,703 10
01/11/2016 0:003:03:15:21 8,761 13
01/10/2016 0:003:07:30:33 7,842 10

It is not fair compair this 6W TDP chip with my 88W TDP desktop i5, so I compair it with the closest I got witch is my phone an LG G3 with a Snapdragon 801 chip.

If I leave the phone alone for 24 h this is the best it can do Date/Runtime/Points/Results:

01/20/2016 0:003:20:23:02 3,722 10

And for me I take it as a bonus that the little Pentium can do all project not just Ebola like the ARM processor in my phone.

Any thoughts on my little power friendly cruncher? in a point/electric consumption is it worth get some more of this or is it better spend on something else?

Re: Pentium N3700 review and talk

The Pentium N3700 at 6W TDP looks like a very efficient cruncher here:

With 4 SSE2 cores it should do especially well running UGM1.

nice one!

if I were you...I'd only search for a "more core per proc" which fits my laptop...so that you can do more jobs simultaneously!

It does a UGM1 in 4.30 - 4:50 hours.

The Aids Phase 2 in 33 hours.

Cancer Markers 7-10 hours.

Any example on device that fit the description? :)

Pirre_eu,

Can you provide some points for valid results too? The time per workunit doesn't compare between projects.

Thanks

sorry, just checked out your intel MBO (NUC5PPYH) system...it has a soldered intel CPU!
http://ark.intel.com/products/87740/Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC5PPYH

there are similar CPUs, that would work on your board...but none of them has more than 4 cores:
http://ark.intel.com/products/series/76756/In...Series-for-Mobile#@Mobile

so, no upgrade...just crunch as it's going!

Yes I Know. I was meaning something better for the job with high perfomance for crunching with low electric footprint to buy instead of an second NUC5PPYH.

Re: Pentium N3700 review and talk

Thanks Pirre_eu,
I'm trying to compare the points/hour or some other point comparison. Using averages of your info:
FAHB 33 hours 306.9 points = 9.3 points/hour
MCM1 8.5 hours 140.3 points = 16.5 points/hour
UGM1 4.4 hours 89.8 points = 20.4 points/hour

Although there isn't a lot of data here it does suggest your Pentium N3700 will generate the most points for you when running UGM1. This should go for all of the Bay Trail, Cherry Trail and Braswell parts. This is because they all have an SSE2 unit for each thread. An i3, for example, only has 2 SSE2 units while you have 4.
