I can't see any way to log in from the BOINC manager software....

hmmm, seeing is believing for some ;>). Go to the project tab, select WCG, then on left a bunch of buttons [8] appear in the section 'Project Web Pages'. In simple view there's the project web pages button left bottom which opens a little menu of choices.

Oh wait, you want to add WCG to the client. Tools > Add Project > Select WCG from the list > select you're an existing member > enter Member name/Password and go.
