It will stop processing and get a new work unit after a few hours. It will also tell the server that it was a non-convergent work unit. After several people have returned this status report, the server will know not to foist this work unit off on other members. Which is why we ask people to keep crunching rather than use Task Manager to stop WCGrid_Rosetta.exe. The difficulty is in telling if the work unit is non-convergent or whether something else has gone wrong. By the next day, it is obviously something else that has gone wrong.
----------------------------------------Added: Points should be awarded for the time taken to prove non-convergence. If they are not awarded, it is proof that something else has gone wrong. mycrofth [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 10, 2005 7:59:40 PM] |

Ah, I see, something like a dud 'un then No, not at all. If we let them run long enough, they would finish. But that could take days. We don't want that end users to wait that long, so what happens is if it's not progressing fast enough, we just end the work unit early and submit whatever results you've currently completed.

Presumably then there is something in the software that 'says' if it's going very slowly, eg < 1% per hour, it will abort?

Presumably then there is something in the software that 'says' if it's going very slowly, eg < 1% per hour, it will abort? Something like that, but it's not a percent/time ratio, as we need to have each device the specific workunit is sent to calculate the exact same thing. Also, "abort" is not the proper term. Abort implies an error occurred and throwing away all result data. This isn't the case. No errors occurred, we just end the workunit early. Whatever it has completed is sent back as the result. Non-convergant workunits are considered "successful" workunits.

I've always suspected there was some ability of a wu to end itself if running were to take too long. A nice feature, saves wear and tear on equipment.
Thank you all for your responses. |
