@Jim1348
----------------------------------------If we experience trouble with the Linux application, virtualizing the host will not solve the problem since the Linux application remains the same. Eric mentioned only that building a Windows VM brings license costs, and finally it could only be considered as a temporary workaround, if any. Since we are in the very early phase of this new project, it is more than important to optimize the application, especially because Linux hosts use to be really efficient. The new beta will show us if we are on the right way to solve this issue. Cheers, Yves |

Thank you for assistance Yves.
----------------------------------------You described perfectly what I've intented to say. There's one point Jim1348 mentioned that is indeed personally my problem (theoretical): How to install vbox on a headless linux server where I found a way to solve this. But that's theoretical. ![]() |

Hi Eric,
----------------------------------------the theoretical way (since I did not practice it until now) should probably be to use the command line to install and to configure Virtualbox and to enable the remote display server for the VM. Cheers, Yves |

They use VirtualBox on several of the CERN projects which was developed with Scientific Linux, but the Linux cruncher have to use it too because it does not run on various other versions of Linux. My suspicion is that is the situation here, and it is probably optimized for some version of Linux.
So running VBox could allow both Windows and Linux users to get as good an optimization as they are going to get, minus the overhead of VBox which I think is comparatively small. Such an optimization for everyone would likely outweigh the special cases in which it would not work. |

Hi Jim1348,
----------------------------------------I understand what you mean. I agree that the application may be better optimize for a specific Linux host environment: Ubuntu / Debian / Mint vs. RedHat vs. Fedora vs. ... etc However, because the "Linux trouble" is to be observed on all distributions, incl. OSX (as I could read in some posts), we have to fight against a fundamental issue on design level or/and on compiling level. The first announced possible cause yesterday shows a compiling issue. Nevertheless the last beta is providing evidence regarding improvement but it does not show that we already reach the final goal. We have still noticeable differences regarding the duration of the computation between Windows-based and Linux-based hosts. During many contribution years, I was able to notice a lot of affinity issues between science application, operating system and CPU architecture. It is clear for me that it will be never possible to optimize science for every existing type of configuration. Nonetheless, an issue like we did experience with the launch of the new FA@H is really not OK in a middle to long term perspective. Cheers, Yves |

In case you aren't watching the Oct 8 Beta thread, it looks like a big speedup for Linux is in the works:

it looks like a big speedup for Linux is in the works: I really hope so. . . ran FightAIDS@Home Phase 2, mostly on Linux boxes, and was able to cut my 'points generated' by about 1/3 as compared to OET. . . . I have repented of badge hunting and am going for the points. . . . ![]() |
