if i recall, a prior project called 'genome comparisons' had some difficulty handling all the final results, making a proper database, and publishing a meaningful result.
is there some assurance on the project here that the same issues will not arise? |

The previous project, "Genome Comparisons", ran on the WorldcommunityGrid in 2007, with a dataset that was about 100 times smaller than the current "Uncovering Genome Mysteries" and the resulting database ProteinworldDB was made available in its first version in 2008 and in a second version in 2010. Both were published as such (Otto et al. "ProteinWorldDB: querying radical pairwise alignments among protein sets from complete genomes". Bioinformatics (Oxford), v. 26, p. 705-707, 2010; and Lifschitz et al., “Design and Implementation of ProteinWorldDB”; in BSB 2012; M.C.P. de Souto and M.G. Kann (Eds.):, LNBI 7409, pp. 144–155, 2012. Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012; respectively).
The database was used in research projects by groups in different research intsitutions, mainly to study so-called orphan genes in groups of micro-organisms, similarities and metabolic functions in groups of micro-organisms, and comparisons with the human genome. In our Institute, only during 2008-2010, 9 additional papers and 1 book chapter were published using the database, mostly in projects for drug discovery, verifying potential enzyme targets that have suficient divergence with corresponding human enzymes, or that are unique to parasites or bacteria to allow for drug design. A considerable number of additional papers have been published since then, making use of the ProteinWorldDB and additional data. A considerable number of presentations in scientific congresses were also made, besides 5 masters and Ph.D theses. The data resulting from the "Uncovering Genome Mysteries" are very large, and the ProteinWorldDB 2.0 will be build and made available at the end of 2015 and incremented along 2016. Great info! We should hear more about scientific results of our crunching :)

Is there some "master page of accomplishments" that WCG has in which they can easily and clearly show off what the donated computing has led to? I found a page on I think the Berkley BOINC site which showed a bunch of publications (badly outdated) and that convinced me to contribute here and later almost all of my crunching is done here. Being very clear and open about the accomplishments which have come through the efforts made here will only help.

Is there some "master page of accomplishments" that WCG has in which they can easily and clearly show off what the donated computing has led to? Check out the News section! You can sort by published research papers or by project update - or even both!Thank you for your support, ErikaT |

Wow~
----------------------------------------Erika, can you please use your clout as an admin at WCG to get the Berkley people to update their page which lists publications? Their section for WCG hasn't been updated since 2011 and that includes only one of the 10+ papers published from the previous genomes project. (link) Edit: Turns out I didn't check the main Boinc forums after I posted the initial question, but it sounds like project scientists/project admins have accounts to edit the page mentioned above (cite). Can WCG admin sent a message to all WCG project scientists and encourage them to add their work to the Berkeley Boinc page? Thank you. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Seoulpowergrid at Oct 8, 2015 12:37:25 PM] |
