Potential new (old) hardware

I have recently come across 2 circa 2005 nonworking desktop computers I would like to fix and use as dedicated crunchers for WCG. Neither computer has a wifi card. At the current time, my only internet connection is through a wifi hotspot on my Samsung Galaxy S5. Before I invest the time in diagnosis and repair, is it possible to run a CAT5 cable to one of my wifi enabled laptops and access the internet in that manner? I believe I have what I need to get both boxes running and would prefer to avoid a monetary investment if possible, ie: wireless cards.

Re: Potential new (old) hardware

No idea what a CAT5 cable is, but I'm using a NIC to NIC twisted Ethernet cable from the multi-boot (Various Windows/Ubuntu flavors) to the file server which is on 802.11AC WiFi connection to the Internet Router. Then set the file server to bridge the Ethernet and WiFi, and it just works [Well told the router to assign a permanent IP to the particular MAC code and converse all OSses on the Multiboot to use that LAN IP. The router itself is not actually seeing the bridged device, just the bridging file server. Savings 30 Euro :)

BTW, the bridged device is late 2005, but I don't run it continuously... it's the testing machine which happens to also have BOINC on any test OS... so it can crunch.

Re: Potential new (old) hardware

Thanks for the reply SekeRob. A CAT5 cable is just an ethernet cable that looks like an old house phone cord but with a slightly larger end. I intend to plug it in the laptop where a wired internet connection from an ISP would go.

Re: Potential new (old) hardware

Suggest you calculate how much the electricity to run these will cost.
Unless your power is cheap you are likely better off buying new(er) desktops or laptops which will produce more for lower running costs.

As Rob says it is possible to use another PC to bridge wi-fi to LAN or get a cheap wi-fi card or USB adapter.

Re: Potential new (old) hardware

Several years ago I used to share the internet connection from my Desktop to my Laptop using an ethernet cable. I had to go Windows and create a shared connection or something like that... this was some 6-7 years ago so I don't remember very well. This was with XP on the Desktop and Vista on the Laptop.

Re: Potential new (old) hardware

Excellent, thank you Falconet. Knowing this, I will invest the time to repair the boxes. I'm pretty sure they will be Win XP and hopefully I can share a connection with Win 7 or 8.1 (soon to be Win 10).

Re: Potential new (old) hardware

Hello, KLiK. At this time neither will boot. I believe one has a bad hard drive (possibly wiped) and the other needs a power supply. I have an old hard drive with Win XP on it I can install sometime after the holiday weekend and hope this is the issue. I also have a few old power supplies from back when I needed to upgrade due to graphics card requirements. Hoping to have this done over the next few days. Will post specs etc when (if) I get them running and hopefully online.

Re: Potential new (old) hardware

Upon further review, the box in my possession is a Gateway E4000 series, P4 2.4 GHz with 256mb RAM running Win XP home. One problem is that someone has broken the base that the CPU cooling fan attaches to. I have RAM, power supplies and even a backup hard drive (WinXP Pro) I can install. Seeing as how the loss of the box would be no big deal, I think I'll just carefully glue the thing in place permanently. I am now told second box is in working order... been in a closet for years, no specs. Anxiously awaiting its arrival.

@KLiK: I think the XP Pro hard drive has a dual boot WUBI version of Ubuntu on it now that you mention it. I have almost no experience with Linux however and remember it gave me fits back in the day.
