Re: Laptop 24/7, wear and tear!

I have an older (2008ish) Acer laptop with a Pentium D running Linux Mint. It is in my sons room for homework and doesn't move. I have it sitting on a laptop cooler that has slim 80mm fans that you can move to the desired location. One nice thing about that Acer, you can remove the bottom panel of the laptop which provides easy access to the hard drive, memory, and processor heat sink. I have that panel removed and one of the 80mm fans blowing directly on the processor, and it dropped my processor temp by about 25*F according to hwmonitor.

those u can run on 100% & they don't work with TThrottle (I think)...

also, if u need some quiet - forget about 80mm & go 4 d laptop cooler with 200+mm cooler...those r almost silent & slower, but with big blades & a lot of air!

also, docking stations r cool! they make a laptop raised, so d heat exits more easily...have those 4 Fujitsu & IBM laptops...work on them is 80-100% on TThrottle... wink

Re: Laptop 24/7, wear and tear!

I do clean out the ports and the fan regularly so this helps a lot. Tjunction is 105celcius, so it is running at about 90% of that.

I use Tthrottle, set at 85 C on my i7 4710HQ laptop, Tjunction 100 C. I originally started it at 80 C, though increased it as it seems to be stable, though there are a few spots on the case that are almost too hot to touch when it's spooled up at full burn. Even though I've run it at 100% and have had no issues, I don't want to push the envelope with temperature. Just because the CPU is good with those temperatures I worry about heat spreading to adjacent components. Managing computation by temperature also keeps the fans from achieving jet engine-like levels, though they still run pretty noisy most of the time.

This is the first laptop I've had in a few years that gets that hot; my previous Core 2 Duo laptops ran much cooler. Although, I do remember back in the day when I had a Pentium 4 laptop (my first laptop on BOINC) that was a regular lap oven... Had to scale back the computation on it, due to lots of heat issues. The vent behind the CPU exhaust actually got hot enough that it melted/deformed. After a month or so of running it most of the day in this configuration, I started to have other issues with adjacent components, such as the USB ports that would stop functioning after things got heated up for a while. Eventually the GPU started having issues as well, at which point I was able to return it to the manufacturer and get a free replacement. When that one came, I scaled BOINC back to about 70% and had no issues for a couple of years, though by the time I got around to replacing it, it was starting to have memory issues.

Re: Laptop 24/7, wear and tear!

I'm running WCG on my AMD FX-7600P laptop. ProcessHacker 2 shows the CPU usage at 100% for all the cores, with a frequency of 2.3GHz (over 2.7GHz). I wanted to monitor the APU's temp but couldn't find a utility that can read the temp. AMD System Monitor only shows the CPU (APU) usage. Core Temp displays a temp of 52°C at 100% load, but I wanted something to countercheck this reading.

cio_redulla,

I have an A8-4500M. Use hwinfo and check the CPU0 temperature.
If you use Linux, just open up a terminal and type "sensors" (it may ask you to install lm-sensors, do so)
----------------------------------------

- AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W
- AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W
- AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz

Thanks for the info Falconet, didn't realize I already had hwinfo in my laptop. I guess the reading's OK :-D

- FujitsuSiemens 755
& several other which I manage admining...

Re: Laptop 24/7, wear and tear!

I think I just found the best Laptop for people who crunch with BOINC.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2981240/softwa...oled-gaming-notebook.html

It's not out yet I believe but check it out, the docking station gives CPU and GPU water cooling. 0.o Looks massive but you dont have to carry it with you, when undocked its just a normal laptop with regular cooling which is fine because you wouldn't be playing games or using BOINC on battery power anyway.

Re: Laptop 24/7, wear and tear!

I am running a laptop i7-3630QM with nVidia GPU 680M. 100% CPU and 100% GPU for the last 3 or so more years and it is still running fine. I have a cooling matt below my laptop.

I'd use a TThrottle @ ur place...& made a fix temp on CPU & GPU on Tjunc...

if it then runs 100%, great!

if not:
1. noticed a quite a lower temp. in room during summer-time
2. noticed a less buggy equipment, 'cause of overheating...
wink
