Yes, thanks both of you.
----------------------------------------This is what I would have liked to have seen when I read the 64-bit consideration wiki page for the first time: Log into the admin account and write the following strings into the terminal. Search for terminal if you can't find it by writing the word terminal in the search box. First: sudo apt-get update (Press enter) Write your password and press enter again (there is no indication in the terminal window that you are typing your password, but that's ok, so go ahead and type the password anyway). Then: sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7-multilib (Press enter) When a Y/N question comes up, type the letter Y and press enter again. Followed by: sudo service boinc-client restart (Press enter) Or skip the last string and simply restart the computer. The vast majority of people that crunch are at this very basic level when it comes to anything regarding Linux. I think the instructions ought to reflect this reality. Thanks for the suggestion, and plz don't hesitate to proselytize your experience and gained knowledge by registering at the wiki and become a contributing editor [the ratio is it seems 1 to 1 million]. Think it requires Dr.Anderson approval these days to stop spammers from inserting their xyz.

You contributors are doing a tremendous job, so my comment was not intended as any form of critique. Besides, I don't think I was completely serious about the level of detail I wanted to see in the wiki. Having to write, as well as read, this comment in every wiki guide, would be tiresome: "(there is no indication in the terminal window that you are typing your password, but that's ok, so go ahead and type the password anyway)"

Redaction done, to include how to quickly open a terminal [CtrL+Alt+T] and to copy the command(s) from the wiki-page and paste them into terminal, sans slashes
![]() (and it does not have to be a capital Y, a small y works too ;P) |

Well done! I think more people will understand now. Is it necessary to include the line below, or will it work anyway?
sudo apt-get update |

That line only refreshes the index, but since these 'standard' libs are already in the loaded default ppa's / universe indices, wholly superfluous. Once these libs are installed, auto-update will keep them fresh if ever they get a revision (Ubuntu and other distros run the apt-get update periodically)
For more common questions, the free http://zxr.es/Dummies-Ebooks-collection/Linux%20For%20Dummies%207th%20Ed.pdf might come in handy. ![]() |
