Reading the BOINC subreddit gave me an idea, is it possible to rent a dedicated server for a month and use the machine solely for WCG, 100% CPU 24/7?
Does anyone have any experience with this type of situation? Has this been done before? |

Sure. I've got 4 12-core dedicated servers up and running.

That's amazing news for me, could you be kind enough to give me a few pointers? I am experienced with command line and Linux which will help, i have never rented a server though, below are some things I'm unsure about
What provider would you recommend? How long can you rent it for? Can you only rent for a month and then have to do the process again? Is there any fuss running them 24/7? Is it worth it? What are some pitfalls i should avoid? Thanks in advance |

Alejandro, a good starting point here in this forum are the following links:
----------------------------------------Cloud server comparison or Interested in cloud computing In my personal case I've rented my servers via the server auction page of hetzner (a german provider/hoster as I'm located in Germany too): Server auction I can rent them on a monthly basis means I can quit them every month. I've got my servers running 24/7. Is it worth it? Hmm, well, that's a question everyone has to answer it for himself. In my case, yes. That's why I have them. On the other hand: I spend for my computers and androids 80€ only for electrical cost. For this amount I could also rent two additional 12-core servers. Pitfalls: In my personal opinion it helps to get familiar with some basic skills to secure the rented root server. You can a achieve a good security with some basic steps: - Create a non root user which is allowed to sudo/su - Switch login method per ssh to keyfile instead of password. - Change ssh port - Disallow root to login via ssh. Hope this helps ![]() |

If you're into this for the long haul, I think you will get more bang for your euro if you buy a used server. Alternatively, you can do what a lot of people on my team do which is build your own.
----------------------------------------There are hundreds of used servers on ebay. For example, I searched on ebay for xeon servers and the first entry was this Dell server with 2 quad core chips running at 3ghz for under $300. I don't know what the cost of a cloud account for that sort of machine would be but unless it's under $25/month, that machine would pay for itself in a year, excluding the cost of electricity. If you pay a high rate per kwh for electricity though, I can see that it may not be a simple comparison with a cloud account but it's something to consider if you have the space and don't mind the extra heat a rig like that can generate. ![]() ![]() |
