First of all sorry if this is being posted where it shouldn't be, I rarely post on forums.
For a while now, i've noticed that for some reason CEP WUs can't be finished on my computer for reasons unknown, if I close BOINC work gets reset to 0%, making it impossible for me to finish any units sent to me, unless (and this just a an suposition) i run BOINC for 9 hours in a row, which is something i can't do. This happens whether i close BOINC before shutdown or not. all other projects finish without problems System specs: win 8.1 pro x64 core i7 4930k 16 gb ram asus p9x79 deluxe gtx 980 all drivers and software up to date thank you for your time and help |

It's because sometimes CEP workunits save their 1st checkpoints after several hours. If you shut down your PC before this, your CEP progress will be set back to 0%.

Perhaps these suggestions would help??
----------------------------------------http://static.molecularspace.org/uploads/2013..._CEP2_Custom_Settings.pdf - especially keep tasks in memory... [ed.] You have plenty of RAM. Are you talking about shutting off power while leaving for a while? A hibernate or suspend would work - both should keep tasks & memory. I have a windows vista (& linux) - assume windows 8 is similar. Or, if working on PC - then you can suspend BOINC; work; resume BOINC later. Hope this helps. Thanks katoda, but hibernation sleep mode is not an option for me nor is it leaving my computer crunching for 12 hours straight, after all i'm donating cpu idle time, not dedicating my cpu to CEP, what seem weird to me is that previous WUs didn't have this issue... but thanks anyway! |

Jay Thanks jay, i do keep tasks in ram, and many of the suggestions in your link are already a part of my boinc configuration, basically i let WGC use all resources in my computer full cpu, all available ram, a lot of hdd space, except the gpu wich i use mostly for seti. I do power off my computer, my work schedule can be pretty hectic and sometimes i can be at work for 36 hours straight. For work purposes i have disabled sleep/hibernation because my pc is used also as an audio workstation and sleep/hibernation can lead to system instability or in some cases become my worst nightmare. Also, and this is something that has nothing to do with computers, my cat likes to use my mouse as a pillow and might wake up the computer (i know...) "then you can suspend BOINC; work; resume BOINC later." what do you mean by suspend boinc? you mean go to the activity menu and select suspend, and then shutdown the computer? thanks again |

My desktop computer was set not to wake up on mouse/keyboard action nor allow remote wake-up over network, only the power button. It's hibernated when not used, consuming zero power opposed to the sleep mode [quick wake-up]. Hibernation is an active user action which is configurable in the OS in a way to not be self-activating. When on, it acts as a streaming radio / media play station [using the WMP], it will do so until me, moi, activates the sleep or hibernation cycle. [Advanced power management options in Windows]
Suspending BOINC before powering down does not preserve unfinished jobs. It does though in cases help to make sure all progress files are properly written to disk, minus the job-step not finished. Powering down Windows as-is can lead to BOINC not getting enough time to close off properly, damaging the progress file, then finding a restart happening at 0%. At any rate, the noted first checkpoint can take many hours, the more user activity, the longer it takes. "nor is it leaving my computer crunching for 12 hours straight, after all i'm donating cpu idle time, not dedicating my cpu to CEP, what seem weird to me is that previous WUs didn't have this issue..." The runtimes as observed are highly variable, the last set [running 1 at the time desktop], 13 hours, 10, 9, 9.5, 11, 3.5, 11. Not exactly predictable. If not running for longer hours, you can take the pragmatic view, some finish, or checkpoint in time, some don't. Deadlines are 10 days, so the device not being on for 36 hours inactivity is not of consequence... just don't cache tasks, ideally set minimum and additional work buffer to zero, so there's only jobs on board being computed. |

In short: CEP2 is good for computers running 24/7.

![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |
