Any hazards of running on gaming laptop?

Hello, I'm a bit new here and I was wondering if there are any hazards to running WCG on a gaming laptop. I have a ASUS ROG G750JS that automatically overclocks the CPU. Is there any issue with running WCG on here over time? Or are computers smart enough now a days to stop an issue from happening?

Re: Any hazards of running on gaming laptop?

The biggest issue you will have with a laptop is the heat issue. All of the BOINC jobs are cpu intensive and will max out your cpu. In addition CEP2 is also I/O intensive so if you are running on a solid state drive, you may want to consider not running CEP2. If you need to throttle your machine back, some people have recommended TThrottle. Or you could limit the number of cpu's you are using. BOINC may or may not cause lagging on your system depending the type of games you play. Individual results vary. You can always snooze BOINC when playing games to alleviate the lag. Some people have run laptops for years with no ill effects.
Good luck and good crunching.
Cheers

Re: Any hazards of running on gaming laptop?

I would avoid running the laptop at 100% - certainly at first. If you need to know how to set it for less than 100%, let us know.

I think the defaults for BOINC are to NOT run it when on battery power. If so, I think you should keep that default but try using the laptop while plugged in to see if it gets too hot.

Running it at 60% or so should be safe but you will probably need to clean out your fan and heatsinks more often, especially if you have pets.

Re: Any hazards of running on gaming laptop?

AFAIK the default for new members [new to BOINC] using the WCG installer, not the Berkeley, is 50% CPU time, running 1 second, pausing 1. This prevents up and down revving of most all system fans. The 'Pre-Set' used is Standard Settings.

The best 'smooth' throttle is ThreadMasterGUI [TMG], discussed in the Start Here forum. It's a little more involved, but once understood quite simple... you can set a general ceiling applying to all, then if you want a throttle percent on a per science app basis. One science uses more of the 'hotter' features than the other.

How do I turn off CEP2 or how do I switch which drive BOINC uses. I have two drives in my laptop, one SSD and the other is a normal spinning disk drive.

And I normally suspend computing when I'm gaming, so it doesn't effect it.

I tried turning down my laptop usage from 100% to lower and my temps go up and down every second by like 10°F. My thoughts were that it could be bad for the hardware? That's why I turned my processor back up to 100%.

I have been running at 100% for a few days now using BOINC. So far no overheating issues but how about long term issues with the hardware?

Re: Any hazards of running on gaming laptop?

There's workmanship and workmanship when it regards durability... quality comes at a price.

My HP I7 media lapsystem fan gave way after 1 year running max, weeks before croaking getting very noisy [got hotter when playing video]. Now have an external pro-breeze with a funnel onto the inlet... cooler then ever when on the desktop top of a 3 fan Notepal Cooler Master **, but running only set at 75% [through power settings]. Do not crunch on battery which BOINC can detect.

The VAIO has been running 8 years on 2 cores at 100% and never a kick, still is pretty noiseless, but then it was twice the price of the I7-8 core. The Intels generally have a Tj.Max of 100C, so the CPU is least of the worries.

** Both the Pro-Breeze and NotePal run off USB ports. The NotePal give the keyboard a nice writing angle and wrist rest [Not advised for those at RSI risk].

4 turning OFF CEP2, click here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProjects.do
it should open ALL YOUR PROJECTS...put whichever u want to crunch!

also, about temps...I use TThrottle, set to 80% of Tjunc temp (4 example, dual-core T7500 has a Tjunc 100C ...so I set the TThtottle to keep it on 80C)...& in BOINC is set to 100% use of CPU time...works like a charm 4 me! wink

also, it's interesting that some laptops crunch on 100% alsmost all the time...while some can't even pass 50% on TThrottle! laughing

Re: Any hazards of running on gaming laptop?

So right now my laptop is running around 81C for the CPU and 83C for the motherboard. Is that too hot or is that ok?

I keep my room well cold at 16C since the temps outside are around 40C right now.
