One would think they would have monitoring on the queues to alert the techs through text or email. Especially since IBM sells a whole suite of Tivoli monitoring tools such as IBM Tivoli Composite Application Monitoring (ITCAM) that is designed for just this type of event... I don't get it. It's like the storage resource shortage that causes them to run UGM at a lower priority. IBM manufactures disk storage. How can there be a shortage?

How does an upcoming Pentathlon, whatever that is, cause a dearth of available work? Cheers http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/22_en_Welcome.html When you have large teams around the world competing for tasks they go fast. WCG is the #1 effort for this year's Pentathlon.

The reason UGM is running at a lower priority is because we can not send results fast enough to the researchers after they are validated on our system. Before we optimized the results for this project, I had estimates that the project would use upwards of 900 Petabytes. With the optimized output for UGM1 I still believe it is going to take 500TB of storage. We do not have that type of storage available to our project on the backend. So we try to run the project at a speed that we can consistently return work to the researchers. This allows us to stay within our project budget.
As for the monitoring software, we use various custom monitors to alert us to potential problems. I do not have experience with ITCAM. I will try to take some time to investigate what capabilities it has and what it can provide towards our project. Thanks, -Uplinger |
