BOINC on mobile devices without WLAN would be very useful

BOINC on mobile devices without WLAN would be very useful

I try to encourage as many people as possible to run BOINC (spread the word)

Last time the person I talked to tried to use BOINC on a mobile device.

Unfortunately, he came back to me and said, that he was unable to use BOINC because
at his place, WLAN is not available.

What do you, my fellow crunchers think:

Is the lack of WLAN for many potential users a problem hindering them from using
BOINC?

A question to the technicians: Why does BOINC not keep the result, if WLAN is unavailable,
and keep it until WLAN is avialable again (when the device has been taken
to a place, where it can find WLAN)?

Thank you in advance for a in depth reaction. I think, that this is important as more and
more users use mobile devices instead of good old PCs.

I want to go on spreading the word with mobile users.

Thanks again.
Bye
MS

Normally boinc does keep the results if no network/wlan is available.
I have never observed that finished workunits were lost because missing network connection.
This should be no issue.
I take my android smarthphone with me crunching and I have forbidden to use mobile connection except wlan.
Finished workunits are waiting for upload until I connect to wlan.

Ok, thank you for the answer. I seems, as if the person I talked to has no WLAN at all.

I a transfer of workunits and results without WLAN feasable?

As far as I understand, this would mean a transfer by a normal, very short telefone call to a number without cost, maybe in cooperation with the provider of the net, such as
Telekom, Telefonica, ATNT, O2 and so on.

I think about countries without any WLAN or very rare WLAN

Thanks again for any comment on this issue.

Default, the BOINC for Android client from Berkeley only transfers over -any- established WIFI connection. No WIFI, no loss. Results are held till the next WIFI hotspot/WLAN is hooked up.

If transfer over data is desired, you may set the client so, by unticking the 'WIFI only' box. Then 2G/3G/4G or whatever enabled means. Of course the smartphone/tablet will have to have an active -internet- connection. Even your friends can set smartphones as hotspot to act as intermediate to be able to internet.
