confused Minimum RAM requirement for FightAIDS@Home (VINA) should be lowered

Hi all,

I think the requirement of 250 MB should be lowered to 175MB for FightAIDS@Home (Vina):
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq

I'm running BOINC on some Linux machines, with 256MB of RAM but it is failing to pull tasks because only 192MB are available... On another machine with 1024MB of RAM the same BOINC (Vina) is running with an actual memory usage of: 150MB maximum (system included) with some peak @ 173 MB...

As a final note: vSwap is ON on all machines, doubling the available memory.

Can the requirement be lowered to 175MB for this project?...

Cheers.

@techs, some stats from WUProp from results reported who've been running FAHV on Linuxhttp://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/projet.py?...n=FightAIDS%40Home+-+Vina . Peak RAM use is indicated as 36.6MB

Re: Minimum RAM requirement for FightAIDS@Home (VINA) should be lowered

Thanks SekeRob ! Amazing stats~.

I don't know if you can set different requirement per OS ?... That will be the solution for me.

On Windows though: it is crunching 4 tasks at a time, so the entire amount of RAM used could be 4 x 45.6MB = 182.4MB. I can see why it was set @ 250MB: to get a bit of cushion.

Does anybody know how to make BOINC crunch one task at a time? (instead of 4 concurrent ones?)

The easiest way to process one task at a time is to:
Open Boinc main window
Click the tools menu
Click computing preferences
Under the processing usage tab change on multiprocessor systems, use at most change of this to 25 then click OK.

That will only allow one task and a time to be processed since you have 4 cores.

With this setting in place it will apply to all projects

Hope this is what you're after

Re: Minimum RAM requirement for FightAIDS@Home (VINA) should be lowered

BOINC will pause 1 or more running tasks with 'waiting for memory' if the concurrent -real- use is exceeding accessible ram. Setting the client to one wont change the obstacle as this test of enough free memory is only performed during a request. Technically a host could run 3 with ease in 192MB, it would seem. Seen similar on CEP2, getting one and then when running there was not enough 'free' during a next work request. so it had to finish or be unloaded to get additional, it able to run 2 with ease.

Oh ok I understand: it was because I have a 4 cores CPU on Windows, thanks for the guidance SekeRob!

Will wait for the techs follow-up.

My initial query is/was really about the minimum RAM requirement (not the CPU) so I hope the techs will follow-up~.

No, and with as short of a time period remaining, it would not even register on the priority list if they did answer.
