How exactly does the "While processor usage is less than ____ percent" feature in the Preferences work? I'm hoping that BOINC is looking at the % of OTHER NON-BOINC usage. For example, if it was set to 20%, does BOINC look and see that so long as all other non-BOINC processes (I am using Windows) do NOT go over 20%, BOINC can run as much as it wants (I like to run BOINC at 100%)?...or does BOINC also take into consideration the BOINC processes (which to me this would seem self-defeating).
----------------------------------------The reason I ask is I have a system that is occasionally for somewhat CPU intensive tasks. I want BOINC to run at 100% 24x7 but if it sees other processes/applications in Windows trying to get CPU time, BOINC will stop and allow those processes to work. The processes are typically databases and a web server. I can't just use the Day Of The Week Override because I never know when the database may get used. I also cannot use the While Computer Is In Use feature(s) because the applications are being used remotely...nobody is on a keyboard or mouse which would notify BOINC that someone is actually there physically using it. Thanks so much in advance for the help! ![]() |

While [Non-BOINC] processor usage is less then, used to be default 25 percent, but for new members at WCG it's I think 50 percent. It means that if the usage is equal/greater nn percent, computing is halted. The interruption always lasts 10 seconds, and if after that time the load is still higher, the pause is extended by another 10 second until the [overall] percent drops below nn.
Only works if activity menu setting is 'Run based on preferences' |

If the higher loads occur when you are at the computer, it might be better to use the <exclusive_app> cc_config.xml option. You can enter these apps in the local prefs Exclusive Apps tab. Long as these specified apps are loaded, the client is paused. The mask is case sensitive, so db.exe is different to Db.exe. For the user to determine the exact name, as seen in Task Manager etc.

by default the other CPU intensive tasks should have priority to the CPU over the BOINC processes anyway. I would think that Database engines and Webservers would have a dispatch priority higher than BOINC

BOINC worker processes at lowest possible priority yield to practically anything, but there's always a latency and -that- is what gamers particularly notice. Large/high frequency disc writes is the element probably most affecting this impression [CEP2]. If this is noticeable in web services to a remote user only ericinboston would know.
