While I know there are no GPU enabled projects within WCG at the moment, I'm planning a major revamp of all my crunchers!
----------------------------------------At the same time I'm looking to replace my HD 7970's with something at least as powerful but either single slot of water cooled. These are currently Gigabyte cards and I can't find waterblocks to fit. Currently, 3 of my GPU's are in the SR2 based system, which is very likely to go, thus leaving me with little GPU power for when something does become available. So, enough background. Here's to the questions: What's the best single slot GPU? What's the most powerful single slot GPU? WHat other options? Also I've never managed to get my GPU's recognised in Ubuntu, so that's another challenge... They work to provide graphics on screen but Boinc does not see them. I've tried installing various drivers but not managed to get Boinc to see them... Many thanks for your comments

Regarding Ubuntu, install an official AMD driver.
----------------------------------------Upon booting up, open a terminal and: sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client stop and then sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client restart Open the BOINC Manager and check the event log - should now recognise the GPU. You have to do this every time you boot up and make sure BOINC isn't set to run the GPU at all time. Otherwise, upon booting up, BOINC will detect no GPU and pending tasks will simply error. So set to 2 or 3 minutes of idle time or something like that. Edit: Added sudo to commands. Su should also work. AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz [Edit 1 times, last edit by Falconet at Feb 28, 2015 9:57:55 AM] |

Welcome.
----------------------------------------I edited the above post to add the sudo commands which should be required (I haven't run Linux in a while). Regarding the GPU's, I really don't know. There should be a new AMD R9 390 which should be fast, certainly more than those HD 7990 but I really don't know. A simple sleep command in the load script is enough... it's a case of BOINC 'loading' before the GPU drivers have [Idling BOINC at start wont help as the recognition process is during the core client initiation phase]. The LocutusOfBorg package maintainer build for Debian [runs on Ubuntu], has this included.

Thanks SekeRob, any thoughts on the GPU questions - Best etc... If you are getting them for WCG, I would say wait until the project that can use them are here. |

Thanks SekeRob, any thoughts on the GPU questions - Best etc... Don't know of any single slot cards that come anywhere near the power of a 7970. Probably not feasible unless someone comes up with a very tall design. If you're trying to control heat water cooling is your best option. As a rule it's better to buy reference cards to water cool because they are easier to find blocks for. As for best, that's a matter of preference. FWIW I look for which ever card that I'm considering that has the best warranty.

Thanks Guys, I may just go for some 7990's but I seem to remember seeing somewhere, they don't perform as well as the 7970's...
----------------------------------------I'll just wait for now, I think...
