An interesting article. The final paragraph is the most telling. Our ability to understand what we are building is much less than our building skills.
----------------------------------------I think we need to tread carefully in this area. Having the ability to create an organism, however primitive, does not necessarily mean we should do it. There may be good reasons to do it, such as modifying an existing bacteria to turn a toxic substance into something benign, when no such organism exists in nature, but we have to beware of unintended consequences. (Dolly the sheep and premature aging come to mind.) On the issue of trying to create (if that is the right word) an "artificial" human I would have serious ethical and moral misgivings. Cheers
Sgt. Joe

Out of Africa: DNA Analysis Points to a Single Exodus
The NIH Director's Blog reports that if you go back far enough, the ancestors of all people trace to Africa. That much is clear. We are all Africans. But there's been considerable room for debate about exactly when and how many times modern humans made their way out of Africa to take up residence in distant locations throughout the world. I's also unclear what evolutionary or other factors might have driven our human ancestors to set off on such a perilous and uncertain journey (or journeys) in the first place. https://directorsblog.nih.gov/2016/09/27/out-...to-a-single-major-exodus/ ![]() |

Not new news but I hope it helps people understand we are all Africans. Back in 2002 PBS ran the documentary series 'Journey of Man' which explains it all:

A Single Migration from Africa Populated the World, Studies Find
Carl Zimmer from the New York Times has an extensive article on the the report in the journal Nature. Three separate teams of geneticists survey DNA collected from cultures around the glove, many for the first time, and conclude that all non-Africans today trace their ancestry to a single population emerging from Africa between 50,000 to 80,000 years ago. http://nyti.ms./2cp5vYa ![]() |

The rise of bio-rights: Patients demand control, get cash for DNA samples- The Eye
----------------------------------------Human DNA derived from biological samples - a valuable commodity in medical research - is in high demand as drug companies, the government and academic centers race to collect and analyze specimens. One research firm predicts that biological samples like those DNAsimple collect will generate $23 billion in revenue by 2018. At the same time, rising public awareness of the value of genetic data and high drug costs are dramatically changing patients' traditionally passive role in research. Before providing specimens, patients are increasingly looking for compensation, commitments that useful medical information will be returned to them, or control over how their biological samples will be studied. http://eye.necir.org/2016/10/10/rise-bio-righ...ol-get-cash--dna-samples/ ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jim Slade at Oct 10, 2016 3:46:02 PM] |

Special Issue: "Genetic Counseling and Genetic Testing in Precision Medicine"
----------------------------------------E. Turbitt et al., Journal of Personalized Medicine Volume 13 Issue 8 July 27, 2023 Progress in genomic technologies has spurred innovation in healthcare and medicine, contributing to improved health and well-being. Delivering on the promises of precision medicine comprehensively, equitably, and promptly depends on optimizing health service delivery to facilitate access to timely, evidence-based genetic and genomic testing. Improvements in genetic counseling and testing access enable the delivery of the 'right care to the right patient at the right time'. This Special Issue of the Journal of Personalized Medicine showcases the latest research on genetic counseling and genetic testing in precision medicine. https://doi.org/10.3390/jpm13081192 [Edit 2 times, last edit by Jim Slade at Jul 28, 2023 6:03:04 AM] |
