----------------------------------------I think i am going to get a 27in imac now. windows 8.1 has done nothing to keep me. I was windows, got a macbook and had that for 8 years till the screen died. Then i got this samsung laptop with 8.0 then 8.1. I cant stand it any more. All the errors i get its ridiculous. I was going to have a computer guy here in korea build me a multicore computer that could process video and photos and on the side be a serious cruncher. Now i think ill just bite the 2k+ bullet and get an imac. |

When I got my ASUS, I queried the salesperson (he seemed to be fairly knowledgeable about Windows and the next products to be available) about when a new version of Windows would be out and he indicated that it should be sometime in 2015 (Windows 10 or something). I hope it is more usable than 8.1 as I was much happier with Windows 7. |

I AM CHARLIE Je suis Charlie ![]() The terrible attacks in Paris yesterday and today have gotten lots of media coverage here in the US, or at least in my corner of it. Even the local TV news has covered it some but most has been on the national news and the network morning shows. The "Je Suis Charlie" aspect has been part of that but not the main part. There was even a photo of the Arc de Triomphe with "Paris est Charlie" in lights atop it. For me, this is the French version of all the US flags that went up on front doors and porches after 9/11. Events like this, the attacks in Madrid, Moscow, London and too many other places normally get plenty of coverage here in the US. Following the more normal day-to-day events is much harder. It's a big world with lots happening every day. I've tried following the BBC and Sydney Morning News in the past to try to get a better understanding but much of it was still often confusing because I didn't have the context. Context is the real challenge. About this time last year, Atlanta was looking rather dumb with impassable freeways, kids stuck on school buses or at school. In hindsight, that was an easy conclusion. It wasn't that simple in reality given what Atlanta is "used" to. Folks had an A|B decision to make and made the wrong one in hindsight. What normally didn't get outside of Atlanta was the context. Normal folks tried to make the best decision they could and made the one that turned out to be wrong. Circumstances were very different several weeks later but that didn't get near the same coverage. |

I hope it is more usable than 8.1 as I was much happier with Windows 7. It has been my experience that salesman are wrong more than they are right. While waiting on my wife I used to stand around in the computer area in Best Buy and listen to the answers they gave to customer's questions. Absolutely unbelievable the BS. Same experience in Staples. From what I have read, it looks like the decision to launch Windows 10 is more of a marketing decision than a technical one. It appears that Windows 10 is ready and the intent was to launch it in the first quarter. My memory is not what it used to be but if I remember correctly, there are beta tests going on. From what I understand it has a user interface that is a cross between windows 7 and 8. That is, the traditional start button is back but the panel like Windows 8 screen. Just went and looked it up. You can learn a good deal about Windows 10 here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-iso You can even download a preview if you wish. Windows 8 was the attempt my Microsoft to have a single user interface paradigm like Apple does. Windows 8 was to run on phones, tablets, laptops, desktops etc. So that the user would have one interface. It was an attempt to establish an "Ecosystem" as Apple has. As you know Windows 8 was almost totally rejected by the user community which was a terrible blow to Microsoft. I am unsure about their strategy with Windows 10. I think their phone, tablet (surface) etc will remain with the same User Interface (UI) and 10 will attempt to ease folks into that UI. Anyway I think I have told you all I know about it at this point. Hopefully not told you more than I know. Just for grins, I think I may download the Technical Preview (above URL) and play with it a bit since it is so blamed cold out there.Everyone have a Great Day and Keep Crunching. |

I have known about the shell from the start. I take issue with the the driver issues and performance issues i have had since buying my laptop. It's been fixed at the Samsung service center 2 times in korea no less, replaced the HD 2 times because the drivers had it pegged at 100 percent randomly. Upgraded to 8.1 and it changed little in the way of perfornance. I know how to use it now. It just doesn't work well enough for me to get another unless the imac proves incompatible with what I'd like to use it for. We shall see. |

I have been getting used to the 8.1 interface and the windows ICON on the task bar has the same functions, depending on which mouse button (right or left) you use. There are two main items that really bug me:
1) If I move the cursor too far to the right side of the screen, I get this task bar that includes the windows ICON but has the Start label just below it. I want more control over when this task bar displays... 2) I use the calculator, but with 8.1, the calculator comes up in its own display screen and doesn't let me see all the windows for which I want to use the calculator. I want to keep the calculator active on the desktop screen so I can update the values being used for the different calculator functions. I may find resolutions to these problems, but I want to give 10 a try before seeing what classicshell has to offer. |
