I was in the "lump sum" category, which is collecting interest at the whopping rate of 1.1%. I also got the second tier 401K plan, due to my age and it's no better than many other silicon valley companies are offering -- and as a case in point the company I'm going to has a slightly better 401K than what I got at IBM. 30 years means nothing to the plan that covered me. I could have retired in the not too distant future based on age + service (25 years + age 55 minimum), but it would not have made much difference. I would not get any retiree medical. If I had the "prior plan", it would have made sense to stick around for a couple more years. Any further discussion would be too political, so I'll stop here  - D |

As I said, I'm not old enough to get the pension (i.e., I was born past the cutoff year so no pension). [etc] That explains what I had not paid attention to since I was hired in 1966. As for medical coverage, I did not use IBM medical retirement since I was over 66, and I got medicare plus BlueShield, to cover any medical requirements. Thanks for the update.
