Problem solved. Turns out automatic updates aren't working properly and after manually updating 2008 everything started working as it should.

Spoke too soon. Everything has been updated and it's right back to doing the same crap, errors out as soon as anything but CEP is downloaded and now a new twist, it's not saving processed work at intervals so if it has been working on a wu for say 6 hours and the machine reboots, all work is lost and it starts over when the machine comes back on.
