Are project results still open access?

My understanding has always been that the results and data from the projects were available to whoever wanted to use them. In other words, the project results weren't going to one company who had exclusive rights to them.

Is this still the case with all projects? I felt a bit concerned when I saw that the ebola project was linked to IBM and Scripps. I saw on Scripps' website that they're a non-profit but that doesn't necessarily mean that the project results won't be available exclusively to them.

If that policy for WCG projects has changed then I would like to give some more thought to whether I would want to participate in those projects that aren't open-ended.

Thanks for information about this.

All the results are public domain.
AFAIK, IBM is only associated with Scripps via World Community Grid (The FAAH and GFAM projects and now OET1)

Please do explain what about IBM and Scripps concerned you? IBM has been a supporter of WCG for the 10 years that it has existed. Without IBM, there would be no WCG. As for Scripps , they are a research institute and have participated in various previous WCG projects (as detailed by Falconet)...

"The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), one of the world's largest, private, non-profit research organizations, stands at the forefront of basic biomedical science, a vital segment of medical research that seeks to comprehend the most fundamental processes of life. Over the last decades, the institute has established a lengthy track record of major contributions to the betterment of health and the human condition."

So I'm curious about your comment about being "concerned"... what do you know that I don't?

Re: Are project results still open access?

Thanks Falconet and cjslman. That's good to know. :-)

I don't have anything specifically against IBM or Scripps. If I was aware of big companies being involved with WCG I guess I assumed they were in the background. Seeing how all the BOINC Manager notices have virtually branded the ebola project in their names, it reminded me of the (IMO) cheesy practice that corporations often have where they plaster their name on all their events and projects to make sure that everyone knows they did it (and is therefore really advertising, if nothing else).

It just got me concerned that the ebola project might be an advertising self-promotion thing for Scripps and/or IBM to get more people to participate so they would maximize their harvest of data. I was assuming the worst, I guess, so I wanted to check it out. Plus, it had been several years since I last double-checked that the results are all public domain, so it seemed a good time to check that again, since that's what I'm interested in participating in.

I don't keep on top of what WCG does all the time. I just like that I can offer my computing time for some worthy causes. :-)

Thanks
