This "real-life" could be interpreted in two ways:
either special virtual badges that are awarded for the return of results that have been proven to lead to real-life solutions (new cancer treatment, new clean power solutions, etc.) OR real-life badges (physical - not virtual) that are awarded for the return of such results. What do you think of this idea? I understand that only a small portion of users could ever get such a badge even though all users are contributing to the project and that might seem unfair; others could argue that we should feel good for contributing to the project and not participate in it for boasting of having this and that badge. Despite this, I believe this solution could help other people that don't know the project to participate in it if it got enough attention on the news (this would be easier with the second solution - physical real-life badges, I presume). |

An interesting idea, many other BOINC projects do this but the ones I'm familiar with are math/cryptography related where there is a clear target/objective that can be reached through computing alone. With the types of projects that WCG works on, any tangible result could be years down the road. Results from these projects still need to be tested, refined and implemented in the real world before we can see if they provide any benefit over current solutions.
