Or you create an app_config.xml file for wcg. Another way is to set up a virtual machine with a dedicated number of cpu cores used for one wcg application.
----------------------------------------I'm using a virtual machine for cep2 because cep2 with win 7 prof. causes my system to crash very often. The vm with linux runs cep2 fine. Especially for cep2 the vm has another advantage: cep2 is known for it's weird checkpointing but the vm can compensate this because you can freeze the current state of the vm. |

You're talking about badge hunting? Have you seen your posts lately? All green and blue badges, and more years than god!
I have one crappy laptop with a single 1.46GHz processor. I am just trying to contribute, and along the way see that I am making progress. I don't think that is an unreasonable approach to this process. |

At least I got your attention.
I am STILL computing because I signed up a long time ago to support a common goal that might be beneficial to current and future inhabitants of this planet. My single processor laptop may provide a miniscule number of processing FLOPS, but it is what I have to contribute. My goal is to contribute in the most efficatious way possible. I will continue to seek the best way to do that. |

How are the tasks sent to a participant's computer selected? Projects are assigned a priority at the server.. Participants/crunchers should have absolute control over the priority of WUs and projects that run on their own computers. The only other acceptable alternative (for me personally) is equal priority for all projects. WCG administrators should never decide/assign project priority - they seem to have forgotten these are our computers. I am not surprised people drop some projects (I have dropped otherwise worthy projects from my BOINC client too) just because of lack of control over project priority. |

Or you create an app_config.xml file for wcg. Another way is to set up a virtual machine with a dedicated number of cpu cores used for one wcg application.. This is actually a good idea, but has limitations. I prefer an app_config file over a VM or virtual machine (a virtual machine can be an inefficient way of utilising system resources - some are reserved for the virtual machine and unavailable to the host OS). I think the biggest problem with solving project/WU priorities this way is the simple fact that the vast majority of users simply don't know how to set up these features . I think there really is a very valid argument that can be made for giving control back to the user in a simpler fashion - people crunch for a project because they believe it is the most important one (to them) and their wishes should be respected AND implemented by administrators. Administrators should never assign priorities to projects or they will lose crunchers - which will lead to more "prioritising" of various project WUs (which administrators feel are falling behind), leading to more user dissatisfaction, and the problem will get worse, as the cycle repeats itself. Administrators assign priorities based on a multitude of factors not least of which is the amount work which has generated and forwarded to them by the project scientists at any particular moment in period in time.
----------------------------------------If, as you suggest, people crunch for a project because they believe it is the most important one (to them) and their wishes should be respected they should only select that project in their Device profile. Simple. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Oct 30, 2014 8:58:25 PM] |

I've noticed the same issue with UGM work units as the OP. As of yesterday I had only UGM and MCM selected but I had 87 pages of MCM's and only 23 of UGM.
----------------------------------------What I think is happening is that a lot of people have deselected all other projects besides UGM. As a result, those machines have to get first preference for the UGM wu's. That reduces the overall pool of wu's for everyone else. The server compensates for this by setting UGM to a lower priority. But this only affects people who have more than just the UGM project selected. In essence, a small group of people are hogging the UGM wu's, probably to earn badges more quickly. So last night, I became one of those wu hogs and have selected only the UGM project. I'll probably only keep things that way until I hit 20 years for the project which should be in about 3 or 4 months. Then I'll switch back. The point is that the OP's observation is correct and this is the likely reason. |
