CPU temperatures.

Hi. I'm new to this so bear with me! I returned to WCG just today and started processing stuff from Rosetta@home. I'm using a brand new MacBook Pro with a 2.5 ghz intel Core i7, 16 GB of ram and 500GB SSD but even at only 10 percent processor use, the processor cores are heating up to nearly 100 centigrade and my cooling fans are going bonkers! I'm getting OS X warnings to shut down apps and suchlike. This doesn't seem as though it will be doing my machine a lot of good! Can anyone suggest anything?
Many thanks.

Re: CPU temperatures.

I know nothing about either macbooks or rosetta @home but if the fans are running full speed at only 10% processor use and temps are 100° then you have a major problem. In view of the fact the macbook is new I think we can ignore the chance that the cooling airways are blocked with dust which in my book just leaves a vary poor cpu to heatsink contact.

Take it back to where you bought it and ask for one that works without overheating or open it up and replace the TIM between the cpu and heatsink Think about the warranty before doing this.

Do not understand what you mean, Rosetta has nothing to do with WCG confused

Re: CPU temperatures.

Thanks for the comments, I have now found that I didn't give enough time for the settings in the BOINC manager to take effect, after some further experimentation i find that the cpu is happy at 20 percent usage and (according to my temperature gauge app, provided by Tunabelly software the hottest the cores get is around 95 degrees c.
Thanks for the help.

Re: CPU temperatures.

Is the mac actually that hot? Maybe it has a faulty sensor.

I would return it and get a replacement if I were you.

Hi Violaman and welcome to the grid smile

95 - 100 degrees C for such CPU is OK, but not at 10 - 20% CPU usage. How many concurrent tasks you are running?

I would do as OldChap and Falconet suggested - take it to the shop and ask for a new one, this behaviour is not normal angry

And one more recommendation: buy yourself a cooling pad nerd

Cheers peace

Don't FAAH WU's have "rosetta" it their names (when looking in Task Manager / Activity Monitor) confused . Or is was some of the finished WCG sub-projects with such naming confused

Re: CPU temperatures.

Yes I know, but if FAAH WU's have "Rosetta" in the name, it can a bit confuse people new in BOINC world love struck

Cheers peace

Re: CPU temperatures.

Perhaps Violaman wandered into the WCG research docs for "Human Proteome Folding" which was yet another implementation/elaboration of the Rosetta software, at NYU.
