You will install a new OS then, so a big chance that you will get a new host-ID for WCG starting with zero points for that host.
Your personal points will not be affected.

Also what is Virtualbox and is it worth running it.

VirtualBox is a hypervisor program to emulate a Virtual Machine on your host system.
This guest system will run its own OS and use part of your Harddisk for storage.
For some BOINC projects the installation of VirtualBox is needed, because they run their own software that comes within a Virtual Machine, you'll get from that project. So no need to create VM's yourself.
The idea of those projects is that they can use their normal programs in their preferred Operating system (mostly Scientific Linux) and don't have to port all kind of programs, libraries etc to all kind of Operating Systems.
