Hello, I am trying to install bionic or world community grid. Both installation files start installation ok but it gets to a point where it asks for a file world community grid.msi and stops. I can browse and the file is there but it says something like it is not a good installation file and then it quits. Any help I would appreciate. It is on a dual core x64 windows 7 laptop. The two files are: boinc_7.2.42_windows_x86_64.exe and wcg_boinc_7.2.47_windows_intel86.exe
Thank You, Micah |

Hi Micah,
----------------------------------------Let's take 1 thing at a time. Try starting/installing BOINC first. - Did it (BOINC) install OK - or was BOINC the one with the install error? - Can BOINC start? A GUI (window) for the simple view should start up. --- If BOINC can't start, try to uninstall it; then, download from the BOINC home page and reinstall. You shouldn't need to mess with the WCG executable. That is what BOINC does. Getting WCG is a three-step process. 1) Get a WCG account (username and password) from the WCG homepage. 2) Log in to wcg and select which of the projects you wish to run; logout. 3) On BOINC, you can be using either the simple view or the advanced view.... 3A) Simple view - select the "add project" button; go on to add project again; scroll down and select World Community Grid. BOINC will load an exectuable AND data to crunch. 3B) On he advanced view, select the tools tab. You shoud see a drop-down menu that gives the add project choice. Select Add project; follow on to selecting WCG. BOINC will load an exectuable AND data to crunch. took longer than I thought. keep posting if you have success or failure... Try to avoid the word 'it'. :) Jay ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by jay_Orlando at Sep 6, 2014 12:06:49 AM] |

Trouble is, 'it' can't be a she or a he, for several politically correct reasons. haha
Generally this issue appears when there was a previous installation and the old .msi file was somehow removed. When installing boinc, it will automatically try to uninstall the old installation, but for that it needs the msi file of version before. Uninstalling will then not work and the microsoft cleaner needs to be fetched to remove the old registry entries. Here's a link to the official procedure for windows http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 Run it by right clicking and taking the 'run as administrator'. When started choose the second option, not the automatic repair, then on next fix 'it' offers to solve an uninstall. It will run for a while and then bring up a list of installed programs. Select boinc or world community grid if listed. Seen it fail in past and reverted to microsoft cleanup which still works fine on windows 7, but that's me living dangerously. The windows makers recommend against it. |

Thank you both.
Lavaflow I am downloading the file from microsoft and running it to see if it works. I did try to uninstall it first but it could not find the .msi file so I try to install the new version over it. I will let you know if I have any more problems with it. Thank You, Micah |

Great. Ran fix-it myself with the latest version as there was a pesky program that would not go away, which now it did. At the same time there seemed to have been a fix to some other registry issue that stopped recent worksheets to be listed on the startbar when rightclicking on a pinned app. Two birds, one stone.
